I'm no expert in this stuff, but when I took one apart I disconnected the wires from the back of the tube and then hit the very top sideways while the yoke was still on. I think it just keeps all the impact at the top. Then I ripped out the gun, unscrewed all the clamps and slid the yoke off. You shouldn't have to break the screen at all.
See..that was explained as I wanted to say it..LOL.

Umh....am I missing something here? Process 300 tubes for 5 lbs of saleable glass? At 3 bucks per lb? $15 for knocking the ends off of 300 tubes?

I can't speak for Mike, I get tv's in, an I have to process them no matter what. Heck it's kind of fun trying to get them off as whole as possible.
This isn't for everyone, just like the other stuff we all do.

I draw the line at stripping No. 14 (size) stranded wire into bare #2 copper. And it doesn't get turned into bongs for yuppies. But then again, I'll take a metal detector over the grass at my range on the back 40 to find every last piece of reloadable brass...

I don't care what the folks I sell mats to, do with them. That's their business, it's legal, an not my problem. Glass smoking pipes, an water pipes are are legal here, an everywhere else in the US, so no issues. I won't touch the rest of the post as we can't get into politics an any discussion on marijuana will turn into it, cause it's all political. Each to their own if it ain't for you great, for me an others it's just another avenue to move more goods, that aren't going to a landfill an just sitting. :)

Yes, just the glass bars. I don't mind at all if they're broken, just have to be in chunks big enough to sort by color.
I'm trying to figure out how to make this all work for everyone. I was hoping these would be a lot easier for you guys to remove. I assumed more people broke the electron gun off and then could just snap the bars off. I've contacted some larger recycling facilities and they are in the process of starting to collect them for me(and I'm actually offering them less $$). Maybe it is better for somewhere like that that has a constant flow of TVs/monitors. My problem is that it's an untested process for a while, so I don't even know what the glass is worth. One color could be great, the next could be terrible. Two colors that look the same might do completely different things, there might be incompatible chunks, and screw up entire batches. Which would be 30-50 lbs of one particular color(not to mention firing costs), and there are a bunch of colors. So first I need to find enough of each colors, then see if they work like I want.
I just bought a bunch of really nice old stock full bars that never went into TV's and were already separated by color for $4/lb, so I was hoping the $3/lb for unsorted scrap would be fair. The bars I had were over 4 grams a piece, so about 9 grams/tv (but there are much larger bars), so according to my calculations it's about 50 tv's/lb Plus, you can still scrap all the metal from the electron gun. I may be able to come up on the price, but I want to see what kind of stuff I'm actually getting from you guys.
As far as the "bongs for yuppies" thing, you don't think your copper gets turned into cappuccino machines, antiqued mustache comb holders, and steampunk monocles for hipsters and yuppies? At least this is going straight to an artist who is going to create something unique with it. And if you think glassblowing is a yuppie thing, try it out. I work with 5000 degree torches all day, come home dirty with graphite, sweat, cuts, burns, and at the end of that, the piece I'm working on all day might just blow up into pieces just because it feels like it.

Most of us don't break the glass and pull out the electron gun. Or at least I think "most of us" don't. Generally speaking, we turn in the whole tube intact (with the plastic casing screwed back on). I am concerned that if we do break the tubes to pull out the electron gun, that could complicate the ability to get rid of them at some point down the road. Kind of sad in a way, because the gun could add to the bottom line. But not worth breaking the tube though, at least not for me.Quote:

You don't need to break the gun off. Look at the end in question an you'll see it's protective glass over the electron gun, or can do like MTP posted, an cut the wires at the top an pull out the inside.
An really lets be honest here, all the stuff we recycle goes to something at one point or another we're against. This is rather trivial in the grand scheme of things. Can we get back to discussing the best ways to remove the glass, instead of skirting around issue we can't really talk about? ;)

I'm a little surprised that so many of you have such a problem with it, but it's definitely not the first time I've faced this type of thing. Let me tell you what I tell myself whenever I question whether I'm in the right business.
For centuries the most respected item in glass art has been the goblet. Let's not forget the purpose of a goblet is to provide a device to get drunk out of. I don't drink, I actually hate it. Always have. I like to smoke, and I support a world in which people smoke instead of drink. I think it's a lot safer, smarter, and for me, more fun. That's me, I don't care if someone wants to drink. The fact is though, the goblet is boring. It's made to hold liquid which limits me to a very small amount of useful shapes, all of which you can already buy for next to nothing at every other store. Making a functional piece of glass thats purpose is to transport a gas/smoke frees up the artist to make any shape, with any design. And we have. Oh boy, have we ever.
Over the past 25 years the glass pipemakers have completely revolutionized the art of lampworking (glassblowing with a torch). Completely. There is absolutely no question at this point that the most amazing work in lampworked glass art right now is coming from pipemakers. You don't have to like it, you don't have to understand it, but we're here, and we are only going to become more and more accepted and respected, because we deserve it. When people look back there is no question in my mind that the last thing my work will be judged for was how it was used, but instead by the artistry in it. I didn't come here talking about my work, other people brought it up, but I'm willing to be on the front lines for what I believe in. If you feel fine about your metal going to moonshine stills, hypodermic needles, metal pipes, bullets, warheads, knives, and guns, but have a problem with this I just want you to really ask yourself why. I'm a good guy, making good work, trying to recycle some materials before they're crushed up and put in a landfill forever.
Oh, and I also make things other than pipes. Pendants, rings, goblets, vases, bottles, sculptures, marbles, hell, for the first few years I only made marbles. I also hope to eventually sell some of this glass, remelted and pulled, to my friends who make all sorts of work, so don't feel like it's all going to "yuppie bongs" haha.
Unsorted - ha. In reality, my anal-retentive self will not permit mixing of colors.

Well, sorted by color would be awesome, but I know it's more work. If you guys can do it, and accounting for difficulty in recovery I'm going to raise the price up to $5/lb. In the future, I can hopefully figure out which colors work best and offer more to cherry pick those. Thanks guys!
Well ben, after talking to u last night, I have been sorting colors. I didn't know if anyone else had been or not, but I figured what the heck, and I figured that maybe some of the smaller pieces would be buyable to u if they were pre sorted. After the first 4 tv sets, I have already come up with several colors. I found another gun that had two different colors on it. This one was two different shades of white. One being like snow white, and the other being more of a off white, kinda cream looking.
Another thing MTP, if u can, I would like u to post those pics I sent u of the two shades of brown. I do not have a computer, just this dam dumb phone, and I cannot posts pics, I have tried. Thanks
A couple of the bars I have got off the gun in fairly large pieces, then notice there was a small piece of metal embeded into the bar at one end. Trying to get it off I have busted that end of the bar into pieces. That is the reason I started sorting them as I go, because some of the smaller pieces would be almost impossible to sort when mixed together with many other colors
