Met with a guy today. He noticed a TV I had in my truck and asked if I recycle them, as he wants the piece the OP is referring to. I said I prefer not to take them, but do from time to time. Says he will buy the glass for $30/40 per lb.
I had none to sell, so I have no idea if he was ready to back that statement up. He does want me to call him when I get some, so time will tell.
Send him to the forums! Bidding war!

Cool, glad there are other people gathering this stuff! I actually found a tv on my street tonight and tore it apart. I got all the copper of course, and it had two small gray glass bars. The best I could do in methods to pull them out was ripping the top band off and then squeezing the metal underneath with needle nose pliers and wiggling. It broke into pieces, but I got it all off relatively quickly. Maybe this other guy knows something I don't know and can offer that for the good colors. Although the 3 tvs I've actually opened up myself only had either this gray or a "watered down skim milk" white, which I don't really have a use for right now. I figured it would be better for you guys for me to just buy it all instead of just picking by color. Is it better for you guys if I offer you less for those and more for the better colors, or take it all at the same price? What colors are you finding most often? If the gray/crappy white are the hardest to remove and aren't so interesting as a color then maybe you can just skip them over and focus on the good stuff. I can pay more for the better colors if you guys want to do it like that. I dunno about $30/lb... but I want to make this worth it for you guys. I'm not trying to kill myself to save some scrap glass, but I'm realizing this isn't as easy for you guys as I thought it would be in the beginning.

You the first person I thought of when this thread started? Old Hoss :cool: This would've been right up his alley. Of course, at first it woulda made him cry ( $5-$6/lb). Then he probably would've gotten mad ( Gas in the tubes! Shesh!!! ) And now, at this point, he would really cry ( $30-$40/lb! ) lol You old timers know what I mean. Good luck n God speed to Ol Hoss!

At one point he had a warehouse full of tubes, if I recall right. The man was a master of the tv.

Mtp, as for the colors, I have gotten a couple light blue ones, a couple white ones, and of corse the light brown/dark brown combo that we spoke about last week. I have every color seperate, and have like 5 different colors.
For those keeping track, I've pulled...Blue, Pink, Yellow an white.
Edited to add : Yellow to the list. Just pulled it out 10 minutes ago.

Colors found - 3 shades of blue (yes really), pink, brick red, white, light green, light yellow, grey
White is the most common. A few tubes have had 2 different colored bars.
I wanted to chime in here, as I brought this thread up to my mom who is a glass artist. There is some of this glass that you almost can't put a price on. All of these rods are referred to as "Gun Mounts", and is very big among pipe makers especially. Some are easy to work with, some are not. Like Monkythrowpoop mentioned, he has to see what is good and what is not. It could be a great color, but the properties of the glass aren't good. So, it's all an experiment.
So, my mom said "The white is the creamiest, easy to use white, no boiling issues, or at least not many. White in boro is a touchy." There was a specific mount made by corning a long time ago...60s-70s? These mounts were more squared and not rounded, and I think the color was referred to as "dwarf white (or white dwarf?)". This stuff is priceless. Some of these mounts have been found NOS in lots by people in the past.

I doubt anyone will find those big square bars, but that would be cool. I heard those work well.
Yeah, some seem like nice colors, but so far I've only been able to find a weird off white and gray. Is the white you guys are describing like a watered down skim milk white, or a richer cream white?
Some of the colors probably are worth more, but mostly in full bars. Having to gather up small bits of glass to pull out into a usable rod is really time consuming and a pain in the butt. Also, when you put sharp edges of glass in the flame they tend to boil, which can screw up the color. That's why I've invested in a furnace for it. The problem is, the furnace has to go up to at least 2400 degrees for hours, which costs a ton in electricity, not to mention it breaks down the pots extremely quickly. Makes this whole venture kinda costly, but I was hoping there would be enough bulk from you guys to keep it moving and making sense. I dunno, we'll see :)
So what is everyone doing with the gun once the glass is removed? Stainless or Dirty Stainless?
My yard doesn't do dirty stainless, so it'll go as stainless or shred next time I visit. :(
An MTP the white I'm finding is of the milky type. I will have to look again when I go down in the shop tho to make sure. I haven't found different blues or a red yet. I still got a bunch to break down tho. I'll have to see if I can take a good photo of the larger pieces, not sure how well that'll work as my only camera is the one on my phone, an it sucks most the time. lol.

x2 on what do you do with the rest of the gun?
Well, like you said, they're all different sizes, but the bars I got were about 4.5 grams each, which works out to about 50 guns/lb. I'd guess the gun can be sold for stainless after.
Just wondering if anyone has updates on thier methods of removing the gun without making a terrible mess. there wewre a few comments before, but you have had time to practice more.
