British Hallmarks for Gold, Platinum and Silver

As I have time and go through some of the documents I have collected, I will post whatever I think can help others in their scrapping endeavors.

If you have anything specific you are looking for, or would like more information on, you may PM me, and if I already have it, I'll post it on the forum for you. This is only for information I already have.

This particular document has to do with hallmarks on British items, I recently came across some items that were being sold as scrap from a collector's auction and wanted to know more about the hallmarks I was looking at.

So I bought what I thought was a silver plated platter for $10 it weighed about 5lbs so I figured I'd break even in brass/copper. but I took the gamble and I bought it because the handles seemed interesting they had markings I couldn't see but didn't have a loupe. I got it home and it had 1983 christofle markings but one looked like it was the sterling marking so I took out a cutoff wheel cut the tray in half and it was definitely plated however the handles were a solid material but it didn't test positive for silver even though it was tarnished like silver. Do they plate stainless? Why would the handles be a different material than the platter?

I had discovered this article when I came over a mixed carton of sterling silverware. It was very useful.
