brass fittings

how's it going everyone, been reading a lot on here and taken in a lot of useful information so thank you. pretty much just getting into the scrap industry up here in Canada, done it a little here and there but not in depth ripping stuff apart however i do have one question since i started doing this i came across a bunch of what looks like yellow brass fittings but when i put the porcelain magnet over it, it sticks in spots where it looks like there is steel. if i took these to the scrap yard what price would i get for them cause im trying to maximize all that i can! thanks a bunch

If it sticks in spots and not completly magnetic, it would go as dirty brass or brass breakage.
Aslo like Mech said, file it and check underneth the finish because sometimes its brass colored cast alum

if you'd post a photo you might find it's something easy enough to clean, like if it's just a spring or pin inside it, or a steel shaft of a faucet

Thanks for asking the question. Here's another... What if there is excessive teflon tape or tread dope on the fittings? Shoud I take a brush grinder to them or leave them be?

Yeah I don't know if they do or not. I'll give them a call before I go. Truthfuly, I have never been to any yard... I work for a propane company and we have lots of leftover copper, brass, and regulators that I get half of if I sort it and take it in. This will be my first time going in. I have a pretty decent load (I think) since the material has been piling up for years.

You can take in a small amount. You can see how they grade and price it. I did this a few times with various items. organize your samples according to what you think they are. Learn how and why if they grade them differently.

Bear; I think he has to have more than 2 post in order to post pics. DC; Sounds like there is some steel in your fittings if a magnet sticks in just certain areas of the fittings, even if they where cast aluminum with a brass finish a magnet would not stick to it. If you can't find the steel in the fittings just take it in as is and take dirt brass price for it. My .02

not really great advice(IF he wants it clean), so very often that one lil pull from the magnet is only a few twists away from being removed. It also takes a little experience to know just how many twists you're willing to make while still thinking it could be worthwhile

hey everybody thanks for all the replies, i had to go up north to peterborough to do some work so i wasn't able to reply!, everyone gave me some good advice and i appreciate it! turns on there was just steel pieces on the ends after going through them with magnet, they were air hose connectors so just had to cut them off only took a couple mins

What is a "porcelain magnet?"
