In California, the large part of that $2 is the deposit paid for the container (California Redemtion Value - CRV) when someone buys the beverage. Basically, we're just getting our money back plus some.
So do they have a way of knowing where the cans came from? Will they take them crushed?
You can make money 2 ways.
1 - Do what others won't.
2 - Do what others can't.
No, I'm sure you can bring cans in from everywhere. I bet there is more money going in to the CRV fund than is going out. And yes, every place that I have been to takes them crushed.
34 cans to a pound x .05 deposit = $1.70 + Alum price per pound =
I live on the MN/IA border, IA has a .5 refund and a lot of those containers make it up here but there are now signs up at the redemption centers stating that you must have proof of purchase and residence in IA. to collect deposit/refund.
Re-Cycler you know what Iowa stand for right??? I Owe the World an Apology.

They only pay $2.00 a pound out here because they have to due to the CRV tax out here. I think lots of people bring cans down from Oregon and maybe Nevada. By the way that's only the scrap yards that pay that much, there's smaller recycling centers that pay only $1.60/pound so it depends on the place.
My yard pays $1.88/lb for CRV (CA Cash Refund) cans. They have been know to actually take the time to examine crushed cans to ensure that they were actually bought in California. Specially if the load is big and the seller is not a regular customer.
Guys in my business I have worn a lot of hats. I can piggyback containers from here to the coast cheap. Think I am going to figure our how many crushed cans can go into a 20 ft container. Something tells me there is profit in this.
I don't think tinfoil hats count...
On a more serious note haven't you folks seen that episode of Seinfeld with Newman and Kramer? Definitely not gonna try to take my cans to another state now.
