**** that car price sucks
It wouldn't be worth it to me to scrap if I read that correctly. 80.00 a ton for appliances? Not worth the gas. Hopefully you can find a different yard.
I have always felt something is "worth" what someone is willing to pay for it. So I don't think it's a question of being "fair", I think it depends on if you are getting enough value from your materials to make it worth while to scrap the stuff.
Your local area will usually dictate the price. If I lived by yards like that I would abandon steel and be looking at non-ferrous and computers.

From what I can see I do not really have a local scrap yard with all of them being greater than 20 minutes away.
I will look further to see if I can get better ferrous prices at other scrap yards but idk if this is within reason right now as I am going to be scrapping out of a car.
I think your suggestion to go for non-ferrous / computers is a really good one.
With this consideration I have decided to focus on:
Copper
Brass
Aluminum (Clean)
Electric motors
Stainless Steel
Computers
Ryan, for board prices, a lot of it doesn't seem out of line. Depending on the volume you bring in, you should get better pricing. It does matter on how much you bring in and how often. I think quite a few board members get better than walk in pricing.
The aluminum prices are low also.

i get more for shread then they are offering for dirty alum.
What I would do is when bringing in non Farris items talk to them about the steel price see if you can get a better price. As you breakdown stuff you will create steel you are not going to throw it away. If you don't pick up steel due to low prices that is fine. But when and if you can get a better price for steel you have a small stash to start off with before you go and get cars / appliances and such
I still consider myself very much new and learning scrapper. This is not a business for me (at this time) or is it how I put food on my table. I will eventually make this one of my businesses as I like the concept of recycling period. You have to focus on what works for you! I think those prices are low, some a little, others much to low. Evaluate and consider your options, try to increase the amount (weight) you sell the yard. When I first started scrapping (3 years ago) I had four categories of scrap. Copper, brass, aluminum and CRV (Calif. cans/bottle deposit). I now have over 40 categories and I set my own minimal weights. In other words I sort better, example six grades of aluminum. I only sell when I have 40 lbs. or more. Three years ago I did no steel, now three categories, two hundred minimal weight. If I have two hundred pounds, then and only then will I sell. If you can find more than one yard to sell to, depending on your location, this may be possible. Remember you are selling a product (commodity) that is traded world wide, every hour of the day! Prices change as demand and economies change. I have learned to make my buyers want my scrap! They "play me" and I "play them" it's all business. I sort good, sell decent weights, do a regular consistent and increasing volume. At first they didn't know who I was, nor did they care. Trust me go at this with determination to make this a meaningful endeavor for yourself and the yard, then get paid better than board prices. Everyones needs and resources are different, this is hard work, not for everybody. Get paid for your knowledge, there's a lot for all us to learn. Make it work for you.
I get 195/ton for appliances with shred
In my opinion all the prices suck
They are all low for my area, but you will need to see what competitor pricing is in YOUR area.
If cars are at $120/ton normally- $130 sounds fantastic.
It really is all relative honestly.
i'd have to quit free pickups getting paid like that ...
Yea..again, bad prices. Even for my sandbar. An you might want to define local for you if your yards are 30 mins away. My main yard is an hour away on the mainland, an I consider it local. Most things within a hour drive I consider local. Being your in KS one would think 30 mins is local..lol..ya'll got some wide open spaces out there!
Sirscrapalot - If my yard had prices like that, I'd have to downsize my cooler!
I send 1 30 yard roll off bin per week to my local yard(shred) and they pay me 140 a m/t
Fail
