    Old sheet aluminum

Not sure if this is a new thing or not but a few days back brought in clean aluminum, cast aluminum and dirty aluminum
and apparently at least at my yard its going in together as old sheet aluminum 53 cents per lb.
I didn't get a chance to ask why its all going together as old sheet instead of how it was separated before but will next time I go in.
Just thought I would ask on here in case others have the same deal going on and can shed some light on this.

If you have them separated correctly, you would be paid different pricing for each type around here. BUT they will ALWAYS try to lump all aluminum together here and pay you for the lowest type unless you specifically tell them you know what you have and ask the prices of each are before they weigh them in...

Yeah I had them all separated. They used to go by grades and price accordingly now all of a sudden its all old sheet which they even dumped in same container and I thought boy thats odd.
Guess all have to get on them as I usually gotten 78 cents per lb on aluminum heat sinks and if I dont like the answer I get probably will have to switch on yards but will bring attention to the owner first just to be sure the guys are being straight.

"why'd they do that?" because they can maybe? Just speculating but I'd almost guess that's the number one question we have after leaving the scrap yard, and I'd also expect the answers why are just as endless ; )

My local yard did the same thing as far as throwing the extruded and cast together this last time. I mentioned it and the bosses son corrected me and stated that since I'm the only one to separate them so it all goes together. I just mentioned that I could not help it that the other customers were not smart enough to separate the different aluminum's. Boy did I get frowned at,,,

I've noticed in my area buy prices for aluminum are down significantly, even though Kitco spot price has not changed greatly over the past year.

I was kind of disappointed last week about this, too. Took in a load of aluminum sheet without checking the price first. Got 0.32/lb for 150 lbs. But I wanted the wooden box I'd been storing it in for something else, so I was just taking whatever it brought.

Same exact thing happened to me last weekend. I had half sheet and half extrusions and the lumped them all together on the bill. When I went in the office and asked specifically about the extrusions, the boss corrected the bill by an extra .20 cents or so per pound. Made my day!

They also explained to me that they bale up all their alum. but the extruded will not bale so they have to handle it special.

    Old sheet aluminum

But wouldnt the yards make more money by selling clean aluminum and say dirty aluminum seperate then mixed together? Eh I will probably shop around im not afraid of work to clean up dirty aluminum for a better price such as ones off low grade boards which is what I work on in the winter when it starts to slow down.
