Electronics scrap pricing. Am I getting screwed?

I just got a computer store account, and they build computers. They will take trade ins, and take any useful working parts out, and sends the steel tower, and other components my way. I took a small load in about 50lbs of desktop motherboards @.10/lb, 30lbs of aluminum hard drive cases @.30/lb, and 2 lbs of processors and memory @ .30/lb am I getting screwed? These prices just don't match up to the amount of excitement that some of the guys on this site have when they get electronic scrap. If I ain't getting screwed, I'll just stick metals, it ain't worth the aggravation

They got ya. As stated before by a forum member that I cant recall "never sell boards to a scrap yard. sell to a board buyer" or something along those lines.

I'm going to agree with Grey here. Your computer shop just pulled scrapyard pricing on you.

I would say your getting screwed, an their not even buying you dinner, or telling you they love you after. Harsh, but you did ask.

The only one winning in this deal is the shop. They get the good stuff, pay you pennies for the rest. Mosey on over to the buyer/sellers section of the forums, an find you a buyer, we have quite a few good ones on here, and located all over the country. Shipping sucks, but being screwed by your yard or whatever sucks even more.

Not trying to pee in any one cheerios, just calling it like I see it.

WOW, how can I explain and still be polite?? Let me start here; Mixed motherboards at 2.70lb
Cast Alum. cases at .50 lb
    Memory at 13.50lb
Processors from 6.25 to 115.00 lb
Now you can see the numbers, did they get you?? Does a bear crap in the woods,,,
Just a little looking thru the buyers section would have told you the answer, and it's real simple to box it up and ship it off to get the good money. For the motherboards, they are paying you low grade price- .10-.20 a lb

only sell the trash (steel cases etc....) to the yards..........use our buyers for anything above low grade........its simple logic and arithmetic.............Unless you have a fair ewaste buyer in your area you need to ship!!!

This is where we are assuming he took it to some kind of a yard with those prices.

Yes, you would be correct, I took it to my regular scrap yard that I go to daily. They will screw you over if you don't fight for a better price and I called corporate, and he said send him pictures, I did, and he apparently told the cashier to pay me that because "the newer computers actually don't have a all gold plating, it's just a mix of gold and conductive filler."

    Never heard that one before.

The harddrive cases maybe not so bad, but there's a guy on this forum that buys memory for $13.75/#, and mobos range from $1 to $3/# depending upon grade... maybe even more.

Sometimes you learn lessons the hard way in life. You had 55 posts. Pricing and selling has been covered in dozens of threads, each one suggesting the seller look in the "buyer" section of the forum.

How hard is it to look at the buyer page and pick one? Even after shipping you would do better by far.

No need to be mean to the guy... he just learned an expensive lesson. Bet he won't do it again. Plus, now, future newbies can read this thread & learn from it.

I think we can all look back on a transaction we didn't know better at the time. I know I can!

You have to know what you have before selling to anyone and know your pricing. Sorry you got hammered the way you did. When the guy at corporate said what he said about the gold and filler that should have tipped you off. I brought a load of laptop boards to my regular buyer here and he tried to say there was not as much gold in those boards as a regular motherboard. Well no **** its half the size but should still get motherboard pricing instead of what he offered .50#. So now they are getting ready to go to a buyer here.

Dont feel like you are obligated to sell everything to one place just because you always have in the past. The bottom line is the BOTTOM LINE, yours not theirs. Always be willing to pack up your stuff and go elsewhere! I am now down to selling only high grade mobos locally and shipping most everything else.

Being loyal is a good trait to have as long as it goes both ways. From what I have learned most scrap yards are attitudes are " what have you done for me lately".

Um laptop boards usually go as telecom pricing if all metal is cleaned off. Laptops boards have higher gold content than desktop!!
