catalytic converter price 11/20/2013

I went to a scrap yard yesterday and sold the old catalytic converter out of my Jeep Cherokee. The code on my engine computer said "catalyst below threshold" and it was going to fail emissions testing, so I replaced it. If I don't pass emissions, I can't re-register the vehicle here in Virginia. I just happen to live in one of the 5 counties that actually does emissions testing in this state.

The people at the scrap yard said they'd give me $25 for it. I was banking on $20, so $25 was pretty good.

I don't know if I got screwed or what, because there are some for sale on ebay in their scrap metal section for $45 plus shipping. Keep in mind that nobody is buying the ebay ones at $45 each. There's one on ebay right now for $18 plus $15 shipping that looks about the size of mine and that one doesn't have any bids either, so I think I may have done OK getting $25 for mine.

It was weird that the guys at the scrap yard just gave me a flat rate for it. Maybe they just do $25 per cat or something. Does my pay sound reasonable?

Might be the going price in your area
and since you were expecting $20.00 >> You were happy with $25.00

Up here in the Boston ma area, I get between $60.00 and $80.00 for the Jeep ones
Unfortunately more then half of the Jeeps I get seem to have after markets for five bucks

yeah you could have got more.But like john said half of the jeeps have a aftermarket for some reason and sometimes the factory cats on them are only half full.So it is a gamble really.

why is an after market worth so much less? Whats missing in the after market unit and is the CAT doing it's job if it's worth so much less?

Should be getting the check soon, $83 ($90 minus shipping) for an import cat. If the cat is half full they will prorate it. I always get really excited when I get a cat but, I dont get them very often. Dont worry flowmaster you made less this time but, you will never make that mistake again.
