Thumbs up Identify the electric engines

    Hello,
I've got a serious offer today to buy electric engines. There is over 120 tones of them, the seller said that they contain around 20% copper, but I didn't get any info about the manufacturer or the real numbers of copper.

Do any of you know who could have manufactured engines like that? They are most probably from Russia/Ukraine.

The big motors are just a very old design, at least for North America. They may also be set up for very low speeds.

Are you looking at purchasing the material to extract the copper? Or just resell it? Extracting the copper could be a big job--In these big motors it is usually held in place with many layers of varnish or epoxy. You probably would have to burn it off before you could salvage the copper.

There doesn't look like 120 tons there, unless your photographs didn't show the whole of the offer. Each of those big motors might weigh 6000 lbs, unless I am not guessing at their size very well!! I'm assuming the stators are about 5 feet in diameter.

Not all the photos are uploaded. I'm thinking of extracting copper out of them, we have the possibilities to do that.

These are old engines, yes. They were used in Lithuania's Nuclear Power Plant, now it's closed and they are just selling left over stuff. They have a LOT of metal to sell, but I'm mostly interested in this.

Unless your can get the specifications or someone with real experience with those models I would assume far less than 20%. The biggest electric motor I have striped down I got far less per pound than the small 10 lb motors I normally do.

I would only buy these motors if I could make at least a little money if I sold them directly to a salvage yard for motor price. Make sure you shop around for the best price and the yard knows what they are committing to buy. I suspect the yard owners know about this deal which alerts me to question why you are being offered this deal instead of the companies who are set up to deal with large scrap. Only then would you be certain of making money.

If you do buy them then you can break one down and know if it is worth it. If you do what I have suggested you are far less likely to loose money.

Maybe the metal has radiation so the yards won't buy it anyway and the seller is looking to dump them on someone who doesn't know. I've seen that happen before so I'd get one checked before buying as a precaution.

The thing that keeps me off wanting to buy it, is that a year ago, the plant sold few dismantled electric engines and they had only 10% copper. I got a offer because my grandfather used to work there and he just got the news, that it will be sold and he just informed me. There will be an auction, but I don't want to go in blindly(not knowing exact % of copper), because every 1% with this amount is a huge deal.
