Love to get a semi and trailer to make it worth the haul. Even checked into loading metal on the rail line. Found one point to load out of, but need to do the math to figure expenses verses profit. Concerns with this strategy is density of the load and layover for the gondola car. Getting closer to an answer and will share with those interested.

I second that, I've used USHIP four times now for that exact reason, LTL going to a yard with a much better overall price. I didn't with aluminum this last time simply because a local was able to do better than the yard AND the ltl shipping cost. I've received LTL loads from forum members twice now, I really would suggest even calling a trucking company. Often a truck leaves with only 5 or 6 tons on the trailer with plenty of time to get it there, or is on the empty return trip where your going.
I am suggesting uship to larger lot customers of mine now if they are out of my pickup range. I've even had people use parcel carriers on trains and picked it up from depots. (8 or ten foot shipping containers)
Greyhound is right around 1 to 1.50 per lb, yes they do it...if you needed something to arrive slower than next day air for more money spent...
Prices are down here not surprisingly. The lowest paying yard is at .0475 cents a Lb for shred. Highest just dropped down another half cent to .07 a Lb. I'm just going to keep turning and burning the tin and shred and hoarding the non-ferrous.

Shred down to 0.0775 pound here. Glad I cashed in on brass a few weeks ago 1.75# down to 1.60#. Aluminum stayed the same.
$110 net ton now
Uship...hope you making sure their insured an running legit numbers, an not some fly by night dude running cheap loads.
Lest here out east, most Ushippers lack the stuff a legit CDL driver has. An are causing issues for the CDL holders, from lowering rates big time, to straight out running illegal where the CDL boys have rules an regulations to follow.
I'm no longer a fan of Uship an it's drivers after research an talking with folks in the trucking industry.
Works for you great, I just hope their all legit, cause a good number aren't.
Me..I'll take Patriot's info, an keep it saved for a rainy day, right next to Gorven's contact info for when I need a truck load moved.
UShip...you can thank for Shipping Wars also. lol.

These low prices are killing my gas $. Down to .075/lb here for shred. I use that $ for my gas tank and now it's getting harder and harder to keep gas in it!
METAL IS MY MISTRESS...PLEASE DON'T TELL MY WIFE!
I took in 400 pounds of bulky, hard to clean / upgrade steel today. Fake Christmas tree, wicker wrapped chairs, fireplace front with some glass and screen, some small water tank things, etc. the worst of the shred! LOL Now I have $22 in my pocket and some room to keep the better stuff...
Getting bad here, last haul was at $85/ton. Lame.
Getting $195 a ton here
Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.
