Took my load in today as it JUST bumped to $180/ton from $160/ton!
Word from the yard boss is that we will get another bump in February!

I've been paying less with the lower steel prices. Since xmas, I've bought a Ford Escape for 200$, and a Corolla and a Grand Am for 175$ a piece.

I consider these an investment, going for a near total breakdown on them in the spring.

Getting 160.00 a ton here. Went into my local yard this morning and was told to dump what I had been holding onto the bottom was fixing to drop out instead of going up?

Or do they want to get all your scrap cheap before it goes up again?

Thats in the back of my mind so I called around and others in the area thought it was fixing to drop. I sell to several yards so I guess we will see. Thats how I found this place I googled scrap metal prices.

Exactly what I was told. Could be as severe as a 50.00 per ton drop and stay down for awhile. Said it could be as bad as 2008 prices.

We purchase laptop computers and many components for greater than scrap value. We offer a shipping reimbursement program.replies

I was talking with a guy who closed his yard recently (December). He was saying that there are no new orders, so this may be bad for a long time.

When someone has to close their yard, you know it's not good.

I knew there was a problem when the owner asked me to come into his office while I was still on the scale this morning. He said that the price had taken another drop. He also said he would have to stockpile for some time as none of the outlets that he sells to were accepting loads for the time being. I was happy to get $85. Luckily I have room to store things until either the price goes up or I really need the cash. The good news was that the worker running the crane stopped and said he had noticed that all I seem to bring in was metal from computers. He then said he had started accumulating some and wondered if I would be interested in buying them. We are meeting after work on Monday. It may have been one of my more profitable loads, even with the drop in price!

I'm an owner and I'm hearing 2 things. Foreign steel is being imported reducing demand for scrap, plus the oil and gas industry is expected to cut costs by 35% this year over last. The oil and gas industry represents 10% of the US steel consumption.

Thank you for chiming in.. as much as all of us here don't prefer to hear these things.. better to be prepared than leave the yard stunned!

Just turned in some tin today, went down from $50/gross ton to $35/gross ton. Got $5 and some change for over 300 pounds. At a penny and a half per pound, I am sad to say that it isnt even worth it to even load up a full trailer load and drive it over to the yard.

Welp.. I heard of the drop from folks out there on the SMF... I started calling around.. Feeder yard had not heard from the main yard they feed on the drop so I rushed a couple days ago to get a measly 220 lbs out of my garage at $180/ton.. Mama yard was already at $140..

This is really kinkin my sh*t!
