Best yard in town giving 4 1/2 cents a pound. With time and gas counted in, I can't make any money at this price. I'm done for awhile.
I'll scrap metal the metal I got so I'll have more storage space for actual profit making items, but at these prices scrapping metal goes into the expense column for awhile.

thats what people don't understand - i have storage space but i only fill it with items that will net 100 bucks or better and stuff that will go fast --- Im not a metal yard . I get paid to remove metals , i dont get paid to store them for a year til prices rebound - ... we take the wire - ac units - batteries - etc - at 40 dollars a ton especially when its bulky metal my time is better spent hoarding things that will move -

    Scrap,
Everything your saying makes sense. Why do something if it not profitable? Why hoard if you don't have the space or need it for more profitable items?
Yes, you could have posted it on Craigslist or put it out on the curb for free. However, this could have drawn unwanted attention to you. Whose to say that whoever got your shred wouldn't come back for the goodies?

scrapGame- You're location says "mile high" so that leads me to assume you're probably out west somewhere. For those members who live in more populated areas that have greater density of development, it sometimes is hard to picture the distances involved and lmited options for selling that other people might have. Just like when I try to tell people on my trapping forum when I have to explain I don't really have any forests around here. Its hard for them to imagine.

Personally, I wouldn't thrown the steel away but if storage costs money or just needs to move it (like stacking it in my backyard wouldn't be an option), sometimes a guy just has to cut his losses (God knows I've made a good number of losing deals over time, the best is to learn from them). Travis...202020 and Brass, I admire your hustle and drive, but until you're in his boots...

I'd have to disagree Rog, I was in that position when I was living in FL and was told to make the metal disappear. It went to a local yard and was enough for a move from FL to ME.

Let him do what he wants to do. It is his money hes throwing out so his loss. It could be unprofitable for him to waste his time on it. But also I agree throwing it away and than making a post about it is kind of pointless... Why not give it to someone who is in need on cl plenty of scrappers would come pick it up, and load it. What I don't understand is why you go collect it and than throw it away. Leave it for others if you are just going to throw it in a dumpster and its going to go into a landfill. Steel also could just pay for your gas if your taking a load to the yard for example if you take a load of 1000 pounds of steel and only get enough to pay for gas therefore making your profit on steel $0 but you bring a long 100 lbs of aluminum and 50lbs of copper you than have profit in those and don't need to use that money for your gas because you already paid for gas with the steel. But everyone is in a different situation so do what you have to do to survive. Your loss not mine so do what you want and ill just watch my competitors fall 1 by 1.

we are all in his boots fyi. why i was so harsh is because this is a money making game and we are all playing it and throwing away money because you have not researched or asked people on here for example how to make money when steel prices are so low just ask the real scrappers on here. my prices here now are 1.5cents a pound and i still make money but that's when i just drive for fun and want some quick cash for smokes and stuff but since prices have dropped i have done what i needed to do working with other scrappers and in turn with csx to fill gondolas with roughly 70-80 tons at a time depending on lighter bulk and boom away to the yards it goes.
thats all with me using my chevy 1500 and its overhead.
now he said he loaded it into a roll off so he has space to fill a roll off with steel and make money even with light bulk but even not knowing how to do that a yard even 50miles away would take it for free if you wanted to fill a roll off but maybe its cause i build my business from the ground up. learning over 20yrs how to make money and what i should prepare for like these times right now and know that right now its like Christmas out there for all us small timers i guess cause people are passing up everything not wanting to do the work. learning the ewaste business from this site mostly and being able to make the money i do and still drive around scrapping because i know my overhead and plan for the future i mean this is a business so if you do not do your research or just simply ask people how to make money i guess your not going to be making what you could and you will be giving it to long term scrappers like me.
so i guess i should be saying thanks for not doing so and joining the rest who are on the outs and letting us cash in while we can. so i will not say anymore because i will be quietly sitting in my corner playing with my money

My price is 105/net ton, I am still scrapping not only to make a few bucks, but to keep my regulars happy. Would not want to p them off. Don't like to burn the hand that feeds.

I am glad I've got a setup already, and its paid for, the supply is there, because I can't imagine someone spending money to get into this now.

I make sure I've got a load when I go, and some buckets of non ferrous to top up the value and justify going.

I would give it away on Craigslist before I ever threw something away! Has to be worth it to someone!
