I sat and watched the waste management guy load up and drive off with the roll off container -- I almost wanted to cry --- it was like when you sell your first truck(old faithful) cause u bought a new one and they guy starts her up - hits the gas and drives off ---

Until steel or any other metal is literally 0.00 at the yard, any amount is better then nothing. I guess my outlook is more optimistic then yours.

As has been said numerous times before, everyone needs to decide for themselves what their time is worth. As scrap indicated, at 40 a ton and taking into account expenses, he has determine that it is not worth his time and may in fact be losing money. I personally am not in this to lose money. I agree it hurts to throw it out, but you do what you need to make (not lose) money.

wow that angers me sorry to say this but I do hope that things don't pick up for you as you have no idea what your doing if you are throwing out money like that its sickening and more so since you belong to this forum which is the very idea of helping each other. so many people here or even on craigslist would have taken this for nothing if you were tossing it out let alone so many people would have made so kind of deal to take it in and pay you 20% or something along those lines.
most of us real scrappers have went though this time after time let alone started when prices were much lower than this and still do everything to make the money and if expenses are that high we cut things back to make the money not throw it out. let alone everything you could have done or people could have given you an idea on how to deal with this. So SHAME on you

I get where your coming from, and I WANT to agree with you. But for some people the math just doesn't add up.
Time is money. why do anything other than, Get rid of it fast?
I like the ideas but, this is business and time/storage is money.

45 miles and .02/lb...yeah..... light steel goes to the transfer station only 3 miles away.
good pieces of light steel, angle iron, pipe, ext stay here along with everything else.
wear and tear for shred just ain't worth it to me or the equipment. town gets a little back and I have my deal with them anyways so it's win win.
you gotta do, what ya gotta do, like it or not.

Best yard in town giving 4 1/2 cents a pound. With time and gas counted in, I can't make any money at this price. I'm done for awhile.
I'll scrap metal the metal I got so I'll have more storage space for actual profit making items, but at these prices scrapping metal goes into the expense column for awhile.

thats what people don't understand - i have storage space but i only fill it with items that will net 100 bucks or better and stuff that will go fast --- Im not a metal yard . I get paid to remove metals , i dont get paid to store them for a year til prices rebound - ... we take the wire - ac units - batteries - etc - at 40 dollars a ton especially when its bulky metal my time is better spent hoarding things that will move -

    Scrap,
Everything your saying makes sense. Why do something if it not profitable? Why hoard if you don't have the space or need it for more profitable items?
Yes, you could have posted it on Craigslist or put it out on the curb for free. However, this could have drawn unwanted attention to you. Whose to say that whoever got your shred wouldn't come back for the goodies?

the math always adds up its greed and hard work that does not but that's why I make the money I do because I use all my resources to make money and that includes people that want to make money as well

There are plenty of people here from your area who would have taken it off your hands. You have been here since 2012 and looks like you haven't learned much.

Not arguing either, its just that any scrap metal can be profitable. Maybe you could have traded it for something else. Most scrappers I know are willing to trade towers for metal or anything else that they dont want to put effort into. I have local guys here that drop towers off at my house for 2-4 bucks because the scrap yard is paying .08#.

You have to start thinking outside the box. I have also traded steel for a/c, microwaves, water heaters, furnaces whatever they have that they are to lazy to put any effort into.

Did you ask if the scrap yard would come with a truck and pick it up. Most here will and pay you for it.

i never thought of that - thats a good idea --- we took the ac's - wires - batteries just not the steel which goes to the city -
