So what happens when yards get no steel? Will that force the price to go up? This is going to get ugly, but how long can it go on?

Down to a penny a pound at my yard today.
Scrapper, Scrap Yard Worker, Horse farm worker, Cooler Puller and just plain ''tired''
Took in a load yesterday of 1600# of shred. Holding at $0.0375 a pound. The yard was pretty slow as the pile was kind of small and only 2 other scrappers there. I am just hoping it does not go lower.
Called 13 scraps yards in my area, price range for sheet iron $10 net ton to $40 net ton!
1 yard at $10
2 yards at $20
7 yards at $30
1 yard at $35
and 2 yards at $40
Back '94-'95 when I was still in high school steel was $20/ton. But gas was only 95 cents/gallon, unlike today.
Even with the cheaper gas and lower cost of living we still waited until we had enough to make my buddys 3/4 ton pickup squat before we took it in.
Shred down to $50/Ton. Auto Cast at $150/T
Clean sheet iron $.029 lb........
Took a car load of "tin" and 3 appliance e. motors in today before work to the new yard 3 miles from my place. Still a penny a pound for the steel (at least they're buying) and 8 cents a pound for the EMs. I would still have been about a buck short paying for my breakfast sandwich and OJ after dropping the one kid off at school if I would used what I got. But the storage unit is getting emptier!!
P.S. I took the brakes and gear de-railer (a Shamino) off of the curbco no-seat bike that was part of this load and in the unit. If I can sell the bike parts on ebay and make another Abe or so after costs, I could have 2 breakfast sandwiches and bottles of OJ
Where I go it's still $80/NT. Has been since the summer. So I'm not complaining after seeing what other on here are getting. Good Luck!
it's not horrible here but it's not omg good either - $63/MT.
Finally got ahold of one of my Curbco guys who is still hauling steel.. unloaded all my "byproduct" to him last night. He was happy.. I have real estate open now. Killed me not to make the $ myself.. but after my last trip to the yard:
44 Miles RT of diesel
620 Lbs of Steel
1.25 Hours of Billable time spent
Payout: $15!
I lost money.. and I'm not in the business to lose $.. heck a week prior to that it was at $90 a ton.. which still would have been more in the "break even" arena.. when I went it was at $50/ton. Never even thought to call.. just roll and go.. won't make that mistake again!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!
I had my son haul off my computer shells etc., today. It was a little over 600lbs as well so I let him keep the $15.00 and gave him another $15 just to get it our of my yard.
I feel your pain but fortunately for now reselling is makes it worth while for me. Mike

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked
Accepted some donated shred and small amount of prepared type iron and some that qualified as long iron (machinery). I sorted out some alum. and copper wire and a couple of keepsakes. Expected to go to my regular yard but called ahead. First time I ever heard them say they will accept shred but won't pay for it. Longiron bid is only $15/ton. Called the yard 100 mi. down the road and they paid $50/ton overall. Big check of $106 less $45 gas/wear and tear. A friend said that if I'm losing money, I need to get a bigger truck. Ya...okay LOL
Good news was that they will accept propane bottles if they're shot full of holes. I have a number of those 100 lb bottles and a few small ones.
Might have to find a new hobby like exploring with my metal detector or playing with the game camera. I feel sorry for the guys who need this to make a living.
Yunkman, if you have some good finds with the metal detector just remember, we like pictures.

@ PistoneScrapProcessing Keep in mind everything is twice as expensive as it was in the 80's. Yeah I talked to her yesterday about economics and she was saying it would be something more like late 2016, she just keeps track of things as a hobby now, since she's retired.
So far as selling metal goes, it's just collecting in piles at my yard and non-ferrous is sitting in my warehouse. It's a sad state of affairs when the only reason I might sell anything is to de-clutter a bit. I HOPE it doesn't last until 2017.
We are at $50 net in KC but we still have great flow. Non-Ferrous has doubled since the ferrous prices have dropped.
Lol, our yard is actually making more from the sheet iron then we are from heavy melt right now! $25.00 ton for heavy melt! Yikes!
light iron back to $67 / Gross Ton in Albany. Hopefully only the start.
prepared now at $63 net ton.... $92 drop from jan.
we are lucky to see $5 here but i have no room to store it. One of my rules at home is not seeing any material from the street or in the yard...makes it difficult so I take it in at this price to keep my life clean...the e-scrap is easy to hide, that's where i make my money anyways.
