    Scrap Prices in Hawaii

Just for those curious, I'll keep this thread up to date whenever I go to the yard. There are only a few scrap yards in Honolulu (I am not sure how the neighbor islands work, but IF they have yards their prices are probably much lower. I know that the yard on the Big Island doesn't even accept shred).

29 April 2015 (all are per pound unless otherwise noted; prices range from type and yard location)
    Steel/Shred - $0.015-0.03
    Aluminium - $0.25-0.32
    Copper - $1.22-1.60
    Insulated Wire - $0.05-1.00
    Non-insulated - $1.22-1.60 (same as copper)

    Cardboard - $0.01

You know you're in trouble when your yard buys shred at only half a cent more than they buy cardboard.

Noted. Unfortunately, the few scrap yards here are competing with the landfill. They can't afford to refuse.

The last time I looked here, cardboard was fetching WAY more than scrap steel.
I seem to recall it was about double which seriously had me considering Dumpster diving and just picking up the masses of it behind shops etc.

I thwn found out that it was hard to sell it unless compacted and bailed and that's where the bright Idea fell apart pretty quick. Not only are compactors not cheap, cardboard bails weigh either half or a full ton so not too easy for the home collector to handle and I certainly don't have room for a forklift!

Only one place left here buying CB from the public and they pay $.01 lb! It was great when the place I sell my paper, plastic and glass was buying it (only $.02 lb.) but I was going there anyway! I don't save cardboard anymore!

Today was the final day of my yard buying unprepared steel for "at least" a month. All aluminum is now a solid 0.25 per pound.

Cardboard still at a penny per pound.
