    Scrap futures??

Anyone have a crystal ball? The yard I deal with in marshfield wi told me not to hold my breath for at least a year... I'd love to see car body/sheet iron back to 200 pt. They just raised their car body to 120 pt.. That's good but not far enough lol. I'll be stacking school buses like cord wood before long!! Ain't worth hauling them in....
    regards,
    IAP

I am in the same boat. Still stockpiling with no idea about the future.

My scrapyard guy just told me it's going to drop again in August and stay like that until this time next year.
I hope his crystal ball is on the fritz.

    No way to tell.

If Europe figures out the Greek **** the Euro may stabilize and make the dollar weaker.
That MIGHT raise prices some on scrap.

Chinas economy might improve. Or not...

I don't think stockpiling makes sense.
    Just flip and burn.
There will be PLENTY when and if prices recover.

Unless it is small volume stuff like clean copper etc.
I just turned in over 1/2 ton of e-motors yesterday for 15 cents / lbs. And a little over 100 lbs of Aluminum.

It's part of what I call my piggy banks.
Individually not worth jack, but after a few months it was worth almost $200 total.

Will the prices for motors go up a nickel next month?
    Possible, but who knows....
They may also drop 3 cents and stay there for 2 years.

I just have $200 in the pocket I did not have yesterday morning and as it was my 'piggy bank' it was money that's NOT part of my day to day revenue.

Spent almost have of it at a street faire/farmers market last night and I had a blast.

Turn and Burn - Turn and Burn...

    It's a number's game

Whether or not this is your living makes a difference.

Our yard (Not Pacific- ScrapperT knows more about them than I do) recently laid off one of the workers. Now, there are only two employees at the yard. They're keeping the lights on, but they're not going forward.

They had an old truck come in. I was able to pull parts from it (I get along well with the owner), but he's likely to pull the flatbed off and sell it. More than scrap value is smart, but this yard didn't do it in the past.

    That tells you something....

    I can see that.
Small yards are really just a half step above us.
Many probably half a step below one of the more profitable members on here.
I only deal with 2 metal yards locally. One is a SIMS and the other not sure if Indy or part of a chain.

The Indy is literally 40-50 times the size of SIMS. SIMS pays better on most stuff, but their tedious paperwork and waiting in line for ever more often than not makes me go to the other place - Time is Money...

We have one e-waste buyer in town.
They recently started closing down on Saturdays. Talked to the manager last week. They are hurting. Some stuff is down 80% for them (or so he claims).
They have 3 yards in NorCal and this one claims to process over 5 million lbs of ewaste annually.
That's only 8 tons a day and they do have 10 or more employees. Huge warehouse.
    Overhead can be a b...ch.

He told me it's nuts to get into ewaste right now.
I told him - I disagree - if I can figure this out now I will be cruising once prices recover.

lots of people forget real fast that everything comes in cycles. There will be an up again and so0me time down the road a down as well.

Be prepared to weather the storm.

And of course I talked to the yard I deal with and they were told by the smelter to expect a bump in August... But not June. And it bumped in June... So the lady wasn't sure what was up lol. Their front door prepared price was 180pt. I read an article a ways saying India was looking to be the next big market for shred n what not. Any truth to that?

I don't know anything on that, but about 3 years ago, I worked with a clothing recycler who was looking to do exports. India was booming in that market. I don't know if that helps- I think they were looking for reusable items.

I do know that US exports have been trending downwards, though.

Betting in this business is bad.
    Buy today, Sell today!
That is the only way not to get burned in this business.
Some of you may have day jobs, but this is my day job! I cant afford to lose .10 on the copper I just paid $1000 for today. So It goes strait to the yard. Ill take my $200 in profit and buy some more. Take that $200 in profit and do the same. Before we know it I made $2000 and everyone else is sitting on their stockpile which has lost $200 overnight. This is my business plan and even with this depression in the recycling industry it has worked for me.
