What should the yard pay me for bulk?

I own a warehouse and will be scraping the entire contents. I don't have an exact amount but I have tons and tons of steel, some copper (maybe a ton) and various other metals such as aluminum and brass.



Should I try to work out a deal with my local yard for better pricing if I use them exclusively? Or should I expect to get the same rate as any Jo walking in off the street?

My yard is currently paying .12/lb for steel and 3.85 for copper. Should I ask for more?

I would certainly ask for more. Maybe even take in some pictures of the stuff you are planning on dragging in. If you have more than one scrap yard close by, then you should be able to do very well.

I would shoot a little higher though. Maybe a dime or more for the copper. Think percentages. One cent more on steel would be about 8%. The same percantage on copper would actually be a quarter or better. 1 ton of copper at an extra quarter is an additional $500, while a dime is an extra 200. Just a few cents would be less than an 100 on a ton of copper.

I do not have any clue what margins they work with, but I would assume it is somewhere north of 10%. I have no idea though. If you can figure their margin, then shoot for about half of it to start with and settle for a quarter to a third of it.

The winning bidder should be able to supply a roll-off container for you to put at least the steel in and they'll haul it off and bring another one when you call.

I met a local company out at the building last week. CSR is the name. They are getting back to me this week with what they'll pay for all metals and what services they will offer (dumpsters etc)

This is the first proposal I've received:

"Hello Derek. The light weight racking we will pay $280.00 per gross ton, picked up. This material we will send to our Shredder. The stackable racks we will also pay $280.00 per gross ton. The light racks could be loaded into dumpsters, the stackable racks could be loaded onto our flatbed trailer. If you would want to cut up the stackable racks the size would have to be 1’wide by 5’ long. The price for this is $ 320.00 per gross ton. The clean Aluminum is .65 cents per lb. Any clean Stainless Steel is .80 cents per lb. The heavy clean stripped Copper is $4.oo per lb.no tin coating. Any #2 Copper is $3.60 cents per lb. If you are cleaning the Copper and Alum. Coils they are $1.75 lb. If they have the steel ends they are 1.60- lb. You may want to breakdown the light racking so you could get more weight per container. We can spot 2 dumpsters. We will work with you to get them dumped and returned in a reasonable time period. Let me know your thoughts? Thanks."

Prices look good. MLC alum by me was .70 lb, Cans .70 lb, Cast .65 lb and dirty alum .30. As far as the stainless I got .70 a lb yesterday.....

you people and your lucky prices. IN my town (Bemidji MN) has never seen over $3 for copper. i dont think weve even seen over 60 centes for cans either. clean aluminum for 35 cents. 5 cents for steel. 50 cents stainless. 1.40 for brass. i hope it raises here soon.

Those are good prices, but don't expect to get paid honest weights.
