Shred Price and cat 5/6 insulated wire

Dang and I thought shred was low by me. .033/lb if bringing less than 1000lbs. Best cat-5 price locally is .75. If you have the space, save up on everything but the iron and haul it to a better yard further away.

Well north here in Chicago suburbs I just had a drop to .05 cents on shred, 2 days ago I was getting .06. As for the cat5, I told you who to contact, he is not all that far from you and he has great prices for other electronics.

The next closest yard is about 30min one way, dont know their pricing (havent tried yet) and they are not open on saturday the other 2 which are further I know nothing about yet.
But i did just buy a better pickup yesterday so going further will be easier!

Ok dbreaker, he will have the best price in our area. I also, some years ago when I started out in e-waste, found a yard in Union Grove that was giving pretty good prices but they start to lower prices and it was not good to keep going. Now a days all my base metals and heavy stuff goes to a local and the good stuff goes up north, unless I need to eat. I used to ship a lot out to Ohio but driving it north just made more sense.

It is quite strange that your local told you to landfill it, its still wire. I guess it just goes to show that you can lead a horse to the pond, but you can't make him drink. Passing up a lot of cash with that stuff. Really, you should offer to buy it from them really cheap.

A little caveat though. Cat5 is it's own price, cat6 is thinner and sometimes shielded making it less valuable, cat5e is still cat5, cat4 and earlier versions are still cat5 grade. I know that seems confusing but I have examples available for you if you need to see what I am talking about.

yep your right, problem with that is unless its this standard: ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.1 and printed on the cable its almost never real cat6. The only time I have seen cat 6e cable not be shielded was when it was boxed as part of a router kit. I find unless its an actual pro install using certified wire, all chinese cat6 fits in a 24ga gauging tool and measures too thin to be 23 in a caliper. Also, in order to meet the standard they increased the thickness of the insulation significantly reducing its recovery percentage in doing so. Having run a half million pounds of telecom cabling I have literally seen it all.

I have seen thickness of cat6 insulation as much as .007 over cat5 of the same gauge. It sounds insignificant but its diametrically exponential. Also because of the cheap quality of cat6, it is sometimes both shielded (the aluminum decreases chop quality)and uses twisted fiberglass filler to provide physical distance between pairs and internal tensile strength from damage during installation, again, reducing the recovery percentage. Even legitimate cat6 and 6e cable will recover lower than cat5, the insulation is thicker by a too significant margin.
