Molybdenum price

Greetings scrapers. Me and my father got the opportunity to sell some used and unused HDS catalysts but we are trying to understand how the prices work before finishing negotiations we have with some companies. The main element found in these catalysts is molybdenum, and we believe it to be around 20%. How much percentage do you guys think is best we go for. Is 50% feasible, perhaps less or more? We know that with certain metals, like copper, prices increase when it is a high percentage, is it the same in the molybdenum business?

With Mo as with most less common scrap metals, it depends both on the percentage of Mo recovery as well as what other metals comprise the alloy (it's pretty unusual for Mo to be just Mo, it usually has at least 1% other elements in an alloy). And it also depends on the overall quantity. If selling to a scrapyard you need enough that they can make a sale as very few yards - even hi-temp alloy specialist - deal enough moly to have a ready sale outlet.

Sorry I zoomed right past where where you wrote it was an HDS catalyst. Ignore the first part above. The question of quantity is what is gonna drive your sale price. As in, I buy small quantities of pure-ish moly at about $9/lb these days. But for HDS cayalysts that are typically under 30% recovery, it's not gonna be 1/3 of that price because the resmelting and everything else necessary to recover the Mo. I've only sold 95%+ moly so don't take this part as gospel but with the labor intensive recovery, I'd guess around $1.35/lb scrap value for 20% recovery. Likely much higher for buyers not recovering scrap but to use as is
