    Burnt copper price

    Hi,
I have clean shiny copper, insulated copper and burnt copper.

My question is about Burnt copper. This was in transformers, and I heated it to loosen the laminates and release the copper. What class does this come under please?

    Cheers, Camerart.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Las Vegas! This is one of those "ask your scrapyard" questions as different yards and companies grade differently. Here in Las Vegas burnt windings go as 'copper #2 b grade', a step below normal #2 copper. Your yard might call it that, or call it copper #2, copper #3, domestic copper or something else. You should expect something at or just below #2 price

Scrap yards here will not take burnt copper.

    Hi J,
I live in the UK, so I doubt I'll be using your yards.

Some companies and governments prohibit the receipt of burnt copper as scrap to discourage for fire prevention and environmental reasons the burning of copper insulation. Check with your yard about this too to make sure it's ok.

    Hi J,
The insulation was cotton, so no harm done.

Welcome from Montreal. Burnt copper is always number 2 here, but as it was previously mentioned above, some jurisdictions has banned it. The State of Washington is a good example. If you're from UK and I am correct, the yard will require you a permit or a license to sell scrap metals.
NEW TO SCRAPPING? READ THIS: Build up your horde of magnetic and non-magnetic metals in two piles until you have a better understanding of the business. Magnetic material has low value and is mostly always steel / shred / short iron. Read old threads about non-magnetic metals and ewaste (and how to sort them), but don't forget that they generally have absolutely no tolerance for contamination (screw / iron / foreign material).

I get #1 from one yard and #2 from another yard. But that's just for windings. If it's obviously a pile of wire that's been burned, they won't take it. But then, I have a business account and some of the anti-thief laws don't apply to business accounts.
