- Tin coated copper

At work we get about 20 pounds of scrap copper a week but over 50 percent of it is tin coated 18 ga stranded and smaller. I was thinking about buying the smallest vaner granulator would this pay to buy to make extra profit I would also buy from other people the vaner granulator is about 4500 to my door

If it is tin coated, it is number #2 copper whatever its gauge.
By the way, 20 lbs @ ±$3.00 / lbs = $60.00 total. Let's say that you have a big $0.50 price difference between #1 and #2, the difference on your 20 lbs per week will never more than $10.00. If the granulator is $4500 at your door, $4500 / $10 per week = 450 weeks or about 9 years to recover your investment based on a big price difference between #1 and #2. If you accumulate your quantities and get shipments over 100, 300 or 500 lbs at the time, you'll be able to negotiate better prices with the buying yards without spending 4.5 grands on a machine.
NEW TO SCRAPPING? READ THIS: Build up your horde of magnetic and non-magnetic metals in two piles until you have a better understanding of the business. Magnetic material has low value and is mostly always steel / shred / short iron. Read old threads about non-magnetic metals and ewaste (and how to sort them), but don't forget that they generally have absolutely no tolerance for contamination (screw / iron / foreign material).

You should probably talk with your yard Ryan.
My understanding is that most don't buy granules of any kind.
There is a market for them but it's a good bit higher up on the food chain.

Keep It Simple Sam. Sell it to your yard at the insulated copper wire price and pick up a little bit of easy coin.
20 lbs of insulated 18 ga. wire is only about 30% copper recovery by weight. The rest of the weight is insulation. So ...20 lbs wire x .30 = 6 lbs copper at best. That's about $ 13.50 at today's prices.
20 lbs #2 insulated copper wire is somewhere around $ 10.00 at today's prices and a whole lot less work !

Sure sounds like you own a scrap yard this 18 guarge comes in at 50 percent recovery

By the way, if they buy granules, you may get a penalty by being downgraded your material to copper turnings and its price.
