I'm not exactly new to scrappin, but just starting up again after quite a few years of collecting. I was wondering where I can find average prices for Eastern North Carolina without having to pay for a subscription...
I just want to have a handle on average prices so that I can make the most out of the few loads that I will haul. I have mostly steel and electric motors, and just a little brass & aluminum and aluminum cans...

The easiest way is to look up the number for the local yards, and to contact them directly. Some will give you a daily price list, where others will tell you.
Unfortunately, prices change a lot, so that is the only reliable way to know what you will be paid.

Im in henderson and my yard has an automated phone line that recites the prices on all items besides converters because they vary so much in price.

As stated...calling the yards is the way to go. But keeping an eye on the market and knowing what they will pay when the market is blank...you will start to get a "feeling" on what the prices will be week from week.
Be sure to always call to verify pricing. There is alot that goes on internally that may impact their "buy" prices, such as contract fullfilment. Always be clear as to what they are doing and why when they are buying your scrap, sometimes basing their pricing on your feeling will lose you money

Not much help in the 'States though, i found last week that their Ali prices are low by 30%+.
Otherwise its a good reference for me.
Times Kg by 2.2 to get Lbs.
NZ$1 is 75% of the US$1 ------ ie NZ$ is worth US$0.75 cents

I use kitco.com to find the live spot prices. Do this check the price on kitco then call your yard and find the difference. For example say cu is 4.00 a lb on kitco, call your yard and if they tell you they pay 3.00 a lb. Then take 3 divided by 4 = .75 so the yard would usually pay around 75% of the live spot price. This way you don't always have to call to find the price it's very helpful if you scrap many different kinds of metal.

I have two yards in my area. Neither of which will tell you prices over the phone. One yard is 10 mins for my house and the other is 40 mins. The crappy thing is the one that is 40 mins away pays more than the other. Yesterday I had a nice load of mixed tin all loaded up on my truck and trailer, ready to go. I was planning on going to the yard that is 40 mins away because I had other business to attend in the area anyway. The price difference between the two yards is usually 1 cent per pound. So its not worth driving the extra distance for the extra penny a pound. I decided to sell my scrap at the yard near my house and save the wear and tear on my rig. I was just at the farther located yard the day before and tin price was 200 a ton or 10 cent a pound. So i figured the one near my house would be 9 cents. After unloading my rig and stepping up to the payment window I learned that they were only paying 6 cents for tin. So I came up about 50 buck short on payment vs the other yard. I was a little heated but mainly kept it to myself. I guess the moral of the story is always check prices and know them before unloading.....thanks for letting me vent.
