    Computer ribbon cabe no longer being bought

    I went to yard yesterday with a recycly tote full of computer ribbon cable, w/o ends. The guy said they just stopped buying them. Said not enough copper to warrent buying them.

    Prices are $1.10 #1 insulated
    $ .60 #2 insulated

    I also got clarified on what is #1 and #2 insulated. #1 insultated is wire that once stripped would yeild #1 copper, diamenter that of a #2 pencil lead. #2 insulated is all other insulated copper that they buy. Mike

    Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked

    My yard takes ribbon cable as 25% they only pay like $.38 a pound for it. Rest of the wire I dont want to strip just goes in mixed wire bin. I think last time I went they paid me $.70 a pound for it they call it 45%.

    My communication wire is .25 per lb....yuk. AND, I thought my Christmas light wire w/o the lights was #2, but they threw it all
    in with the communication wire. That means I don't have to cut the lights off anymore. Or check another yard, which I'll do this week. What a bummer. Lots of other insulated I thought was big enough to be #2 insulated he threw into the communication wire bucket, too. He also took out some of my extruded and put in cast. Bad day. Next time I'll pay a little visit to the owner !

    Dee, when they can tell it is christmas light wire they give a bad price. Because theirs a lot of insulation, and a very very small amount of copper, different from normal random wires we get.

    I get .25 cents a pound for my ribbon wire, call it comm wire.

    I see a couple of things going on in the low echilon markets right now. those yards that are normal ripoff, are ripping off more now, because of they can, their customer base is made up of newbs, homeless, those handicapped by transportation to larger yards, tweekers, and those too desperate to pitch a *itch.

    there are those yards basically honest, that are covering their butts, in case of an economical total melt down, the signs are scarry out there folks, also e scrapping is relitivly new to most, and com wire is new or at least becomming more common to many of them. like any other good business, yards are quick to drop prices at the slitest glitch in the market or economy, on the other hand not so quik to raise prices when the market improves, this is only good business sence.
    the price drop and most of us lose a few dollars, or at most a few 10s of dollars. an decient yard can lose 10s of thousands in a single day, just ask Easy, or Mario.

    what is going to happen I dont know, and I wont be arround long enough to worry about it, but I will be looking down , or up, which ever the case may be, , and worring about my America and all of you.

    My advice is to sell only what ya have to to get buy and hoard the rest for better times or that rainey day. if things go o Hel* that scrap makes vrery good trade goods.

    One other thing there are so many Newbs and tweekers in the market who dont know what the prices or class of scrap or dont care the marginal yards will screw you because they can, they dont need you, with the number of scrappers out there.
    just my .02

    keep in mind that if you have decent volume you can usually talk to the manager and get a slightly better price.

    Yards by me pay #2 price for ribbion wire with ends cut off and Christmas lights with bulbs cut off as well. In Dec I got .95 for #2 ins and 1.65 for #1 ins wire. Most of us here go to the yard alot and the people who work there know us and what we bring in. When there is a new guy at the scale and starts going thru everything I normally tell him what it is. When I bring in brass I always bring in another box of die cast as they go thru the box of brass every time! Last time they went thru the box of die cast, LOL like I am going to rip them off on a .10 a pound item! When they start checking Alum with the magnet I pull mine out as well! If they pull out something that I don't agree with I take it back home with me!
