    Beginner's questions

    Hi guys,

My name is James. I'm 26 years old and from Maine. Just getting into scrapping. I made an introduction thread explaining a little about me in the introduction forums. (I can't post a link because I don't have those rights yet.)

I have a few questions that I would be very appreciative if I could get some assistance with.

To start, my biggest problem right now is that the yard local to me wants me to get Freon removal stickered. The issue there is that, as of right now, I don't know where I can get that done for free, or for very low cost. I am currently sitting on one AC (which I am yet to pull apart). I'm scheduled to pick up a standing freezer tomorrow along with another AC. My dad even has several fridges and other Freon stuff. As of this moment I can't turn them in, so it's just cash sitting there. How have other people worked around this situation? I assume, based off logic, that I should try other yards? There's only 1 or 2 around me. I'll check with them but I would assume their standards are the same.

My next question relates to e-scrap. I understand that there's a lot of value in different e-scrap. However, I'm having difficulty understanding where I'd send the "circuit boards" and other stuff. Do those go right to the scrap yard, too? If so, is that the reason why a lot of the e-scrap is worth it? Take your boards, other misc metals, sort all the wires, and get rid of the plastic? (Unless you're going to keep the plastic to try to sell, too.) Is this mostly for computer towers? Or will it relate to just about anything that has a motherboard?

I have a few other small questions but I don't want to bombard you guys. That'll be it for now!

Thank you so much for the time reading this, and any of your answers to my specific question. Sincerely, much appreciated.

    -James

On the ewaste, I've seen lots of references to green boards (higher grade) and brown boards ( lower grade), and see that here too, I usually just leave the brown ones alone, wherever they're at, and haul em off with the shred. That's unless they have transformers or copper showing, I'll pop that stuff off to go in a better pile.

For the freon items my yard charges an 8.00 fee for the freon. If i am just picking up an item with freon I charge them the fee. If am getting a bunch of other stuff with some good value I usally just take the charge myself. I hope I hepled you. - Dan

There isn't motherboards in everything, if it's a brown board then it's a circuit board. There is a little bit of gold plating on some brown boards but not usually. You can have a mid-grade without gold on them, just have a lot of IC chips. There is decent boards in printers and fax, hi-end telephones, and other stuff. The answers are all in here if you take the time to read it. There is also some good buyers here on the forum that have great references also. Take the time to read and all your questions will disappear.

Koldes, if you're near me, I'd be glad to meet with you. For ewaste here in Maine, there are a couple options. Neither really good. I'm stockpiling mine for now.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Thank you for all the responses, everyone. Mechanic, I did read both of those threads you linked for me. I appreciate them. I believe my only option right now is to try to find someone to remove the Freon for free.

Sounds good, Mick! I see you're up past Augusta in Palermo? I'm in Lewiston right now. Should be about an hour trip/50 miles. Cool to see another Mainer on here!

Mick, would the shipping be too bad to ship down to Jersey or one of the other close buyers?

I've already looked into it. Chris (CLR Solutions in NJ) is closest for me. Still not really viable. I'll just keep stockpiling. I hate to use somebody not on the Forum, but that may have to happen.

I'm far from having a huge enough stockpile that I'll need to think about shipping - but it will be something that I think Mick and I (and anyone else that would be able to join it) should definitely talk about at some point.

Still have a lot to learn, but working on some of the basics right now!

As many of you scrappers know, pre-scrapping, your eyes don't really realize the wealth around you. Well, my eyes haven't, for years.

My dad owns a salvage yard in Maine. Excluding all of the thousands of vehicles he has (which, selling parts, puts dinner on our tables), he has thousands and thousands of dollars worth of scrap on the ground. Not only that, but he has always been a stingy collector. We have many different appliances all around our property. Fridges, freezers, microwaves, tons of e-waste and other stuff.

I'm currently working with him (with my eyes now wide open to see the real value in stuff) to start organizing things. I'm going to create a thread coming up with a bunch of pictures and counts of the things we have. That way I can get the best advice and the best method to move forward with everything. I'm pretty pumped!

Also, just a quick update - I found a local (just farther than the one I went to originally) scrap yard that doesn't need the Freon stuff to be stickered. Just needs the Freon to be simply removed. Better prices, too.
