Experienced Scrapper
Hi there,
I know that the alkaline (AAA) batteries are tiny and almost invisible to the big scrapper guy, but I was interested to know if there are places that collect these batteries for a profit?
Some guys of the forum that mentioned them, said that they threw them in the general shred pile but I think is not the right way, profit wise and environmental wise. These tiny batteries have many precious metals that are worth more that common iron.
Please share your experience.

What precious metals do you think are in alkaline batteries? The battery part is made of a zinc anode and a manganese dioxide cathode with potassium hydroxide used as an electrolyte, and the outer casing is steel.

You are completely right with your reasoning.
In my question I wanted to ask not only about the alkaline batteries but for all other kinds of them like button batteries, coin batteries, watch batteries etc. etc.
The metals that I mentioned in common anode are zinc or lithium; common cathode materials are manganese dioxide, silver oxide, carbon monofluoride, cupric oxide etc.

They do accept them, as well as light bulbs. I took a few 5 gallon buckets full of alkaline batteries over there the other day and they must have thought I was nuts. Whole foods also has a bin for them, but it is much smaller.

i just throw them in with car and truck batteries and my yard takes them all.

Household Hazardous waste by me says they are not hazardous and to throw them in the trash! Nope ,They go into the steel!

I have wondered this as well but mine go in the general scrape bin. I will have to see if my yard will take normal batteries with the car batteries. Thanks

I was told years ago that a single battery contaminates an acre of groundwater. I've been living like that is true and recycling them for years. This is news to me.

I buy them happy. Bring them with you. not gonna lie the price aint great but it is a buyer for them.

DISPOSING OF GENERAL PURPOSE & ALKALINE BATTERIES
Alkaline batteries can be safely disposed of with normal household waste. Never dispose of batteries in fire because they could explode.
Due to concerns about mercury in the municipal solid waste stream, we have voluntarily eliminated all of the added mercury from our alkaline batteries since 1993, while maintaining the performance you demand. Our alkaline batteries are composed primarily of common metals—steel, zinc, and manganese—and do not pose a health or environmental risk during normal use or disposal.
It is important not to dispose of large amounts of alkaline batteries in a group. Used batteries are often not completely "dead." Grouping used batteries together can bring these "live" batteries into contact with one another, creating safety risks.
Proven cost-effective and environmentally safe recycling processes are not yet universally available for alkaline batteries. Some communities offer recycling or collection of alkaline batteries—contact your local government for disposal practices in your area.
