    alu vs die cast alu

got a new kink at the yard today. need help on this one
called my yard for prices and asked for cast price i000 lb. they asked if it was cast or die cast. never ran into this before.

Im pretty sure I know the difference but since we are talking some substancial weight here (for me). I need clarification.

Die cast medium to dark grey in color lighter in weight then cast alu correct ?

what other ways can I be sure ?

is there a way to bring the cast up to higher greade like smelting into ingots ?

I was quoted >27 for the die cast and .44 for the cast.

    I thought "die-cast" referred to cast zinc/pot-metal.

Die-cast is Zivc. You can smelt it down if you want but I don't think it will improve the price.

There is die cast metal and then there is die casting. Die casting is a process of injecting molten metal into a die to form a piece.

Die cast metal contains zinc. You can't improve die cast into anything better by smelting it.

Some of the things that are made out of die cast metal are:

    • Metal toys (tractors, trucks)
    • Grilles from older cars. (Head lamp bezels on older GM pickups, Ford Lincoln grilles)
    • Centers caps on some steel and aluminum wheels. (GM was good for this on their Chevy trucks and rally sport wheels)
    • Cast bracket for mounting the fan blade onto ceiling fans.
    • Fake brass decorative items. (center pieces, switch plates, vase, picture frames)
    • Kitchen cabinet handles.
    • Gear box in some windows that you crank open.
    • Electrical conduit connectors.
    • Carburetors

The easiest way to know if something is die cast is by the weight of the item. Die cast metal is much heavier than cast aluminum.
