There is die cast metal and then there is die casting. Die casting is a process of injecting molten metal into a die to form a piece.
Die cast metal contains zinc. You can't improve die cast into anything better by smelting it.
Some of the things that are made out of die cast metal are:
- Metal toys (tractors, trucks)
- Grilles from older cars. (Head lamp bezels on older GM pickups, Ford Lincoln grilles)
- Centers caps on some steel and aluminum wheels. (GM was good for this on their Chevy trucks and rally sport wheels)
- Cast bracket for mounting the fan blade onto ceiling fans.
- Fake brass decorative items. (center pieces, switch plates, vase, picture frames)
- Kitchen cabinet handles.
- Gear box in some windows that you crank open.
- Electrical conduit connectors.
- Carburetors
The easiest way to know if something is die cast is by the weight of the item. Die cast metal is much heavier than cast aluminum.
