How Much Gold is in an Olympic Gold Medal?

I just received an email from one of the yards I use and it had this quote in it, "FUN FACT: Did you know that the gold medals handed out are made of 92.5% silver and plated with gold?" I found this interesting, so I thought I would share. I figured they were plated, but not over silver. I thought it would have been a cheaper material. Wonder when or if it was ever solid gold.

It is plated with 6 grams of 24 karat gold. I looked this up also at the start of the games. Thy diet always give out medals. Thy used to give out cups. The medals in the beginning were solid gold and they have changed throughout history so some are bigger and heavier than others. Just another bit of info. The hosting country decides what material the medals are made out of.
