weight of processors and "weather" question

Ok, i'm seeing a lot of posts about gold content in a cpu, but was more interested in the actual weight of a 386 and 486 processor. I dont have any to weigh, and I am basing a purchase price on the # of processors in this lot.

Also, how much effect will weather have on a processor (and its value)? I have a customer that says he has 100 old systems with 386/486's stacked up like cord wood outside his house.

    Thanks!

Just weighed some Intel i486 DX2 processors last week. .81 ounces each--.05#--22.96g. (40) of them weighed just over 2 pounds.

i wouldn't worry about where they've been, or what they'd been through, if you're just buying as scrap anyway

The only worry you might have would be if your buying by the lb and they have water laying inside them.

about your corrosion, I learned a little secret working in the gold mine, gold doesn't rust ; ) If you want to know if it's real, or "fool's" gold, just wet it down, and wait a couple days

Yea but it'll sure corrode the screws that hold it all together, might be a real PITA. And I don't mean the bread,,,

I doubt it'll be any problem Mech, if it is, just get a crowbar ; ) I piled some in a leaky old shed for several years just trying to keep them out of sight, and don't recall any problems with that when I did begin to scrap them out. These had tops off and everything else. There were lots of them too. When I tore them down to get the boards out (nobody bought smaller amounts of boards then, the scrapyard didn't take them, and the landfill didn't want them. I felt relieved after finding a place that would just take them), the cases filled a 4x10 trailer 4 times (with extras in the truck each trip) I just don't recall any screws having rusted up in any of them.

But am I the only one that pulls the brass standoff's (from the motherboard) out of the chassis' before they scrap them? They older ones may be brass and the newer ones are just steel.
