Transformers should go in their own bucket. The yard I deal with buys them separtely.
The copper in most transformers can be easily separated from the core. I've done transformers from half the size of my palm to over 300 pounds.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.
I think transformers are a few cents more than motors. I do know not to put them in a 55 gallon barrell if you ever want to move the barrell again!
Lol, I have a few in a 5 gallon pale and its getting pretty heavy as I add them to it! Cant imagine what a full 55-gallon barrell would weigh!
By me they go together
they're a lot more condensed that elec motors are, no open air pockets inside
As with most things it will depend on your local yard.
Everyone on here will have a different category that they put different things in because that is how their yard buys them, what matters most is how your buyer classifies them.

Transformers and cbms are seperate at my yard(s). The flybacks from TVs can be mixed in with cbms.
What's strange is that my yard won't buy transformers but will buy electric motors all day long. I explained to them that pound for pound they are more valuable than the motors. Needless to say I still have my buckets of transformers.
I wonder if it could be a case of too many transformers with Al windings rather than Cu. I break down motors and transformer for the Cu and find many I get from other scrapers have Al windings. The ones that have Al windings I just toss in with the small motors and transformers and off to the scrap yard they go. Mike.

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked
My yard paid me $0.15 for Electric motors, and $0.20 for Transformers.
I put electric motors and transformers together and get .32 for them.
as you can see it depends on your yard, so you have to ask them. Now, you may ask the guy at your yard "should I mix transformers with electric motors" and he may say "no, we only take motors"....and then when you show him a small transformer he'll say "that's a motor! put it in with motors!" etc. -- Some people automatically think of large, oil-filled units that hang on telephone poles when they hear the word "transformer", and they view any sort of copper winding as "electric motor." So you might want to take a couple representative examples when you ask, just to be sure.
Filled up a mop bucket 1/2 full! Weighs 50 pounds! If you lift it up by the handle the plastic is going to break!
This thread blows my mind the yard I use pays only .06 lb for transformers!. Makes me wanna just throw them in with light iron but I know I should't do that.
