Is $2.80/ lb high for copper?

So I was at my local scrap yard today and I asked the guy what copper was going for at the moment. He told me $2.80 per lb, which I thought was high. I heard rumors that copper was over $3 there at one point, so I'm not sure whether to consider $2.80 a high price or not. Any advice?

The two yards closest to me that advertise their prices in "The Pennysaver" are at $3.05 and $3.02 for #1, and 10 cents less than that for #2.

Ok, I think I'll hold out until it's at least $3. That'll give me time to build up a larger stash

If you do not need the money, it would be a good idea to hold on to it. One the economy starts picking up then copper will be in greater demand for building supplies. I am sitting on about 150 pounds right now, and trying to get more, waiting for it to go well over $3 a pound.

I took in some waterheaters and brass today. #1 Copper was 3.25 and #2 was 3.00

Got #2 for 3.10 a lb here last week.

I just got paid 3.350 at my yard....

#1 copper $3.65
#2 copper $3.40

I'm getting 3.55 for #2 that all I no cause they mark all my copper as #2 I think next time I bring in my clean wire if they mark it as #2 I'm gunna say something cause I wait till I have atleast 40 pounds before I take it in so if I get 25 cent more for #1 I would be getting an extra 10 a run

Great mate! That is the going price today! We all save but when the time is right , sell,sell sell,!
I still think we will hit $ 5.00 soon before it drops. Take that with a grain of salt. Many have made the grade on such in site !

Yard prices around here locally, have gone up about 50cents per pound since Dec2010. Avg around $3.50 for Bright/Bare, and $3.30 for #1.
Rumors are there are places paying around $4 ,but I haven't found them yet.
If anyone knows of a better rate than $3.50 per pound for Bright /Bare, please let me know where they are. I am in SC, but it may be worth my while to check it out.
