There is usually a spec- sticker on the side or back of the unit. It looks like this:

Under the word "Charge" it says R22, which is the kind of refrigeration in the unit.

UPDATE: I just got a quote back from a refrigeration company who can drain them at $20 each plus tax. I think I can still make money on that. I'm going to do some research to see if it is.

I believe that Texas thing all began before Alaska became a state (in 1959)
One old west Texas rancher, bragging to an out of state visitor about the size of his ranch says, " I can take off driving at sunup, and when the sun sets, I still haven't reached the other side of my ranch." The visitor, hands in his pockets, rustling the pebbles under his feet, "yep! I had a truck like that once"

Do you know have any friends that are mechanics? They always need something or will barter on the side.

How do you know they have a charge in them? Most are not working from a lack of freon.
Do you really think every one is paying for freon reremoval. If so i got a bridge to sell you.

I know i pay $20-$30 for removal just to make $15-$20 all the time. (wink wink)

IDK, I just like to do things officially I guess. I try to keep my professional status high, and I try to keep my operations legal as much as possible. Anyway, I think it makes me look better when I can say I have all Freon containing units professionally drained and are in 100% compliance with Texas State Laws. Just a personal thing.

Ok, time to resurrect this thread. I actually contacted some of my competition and asked if he would drain them for me if I paid him. He actually said that he would be interested in buying them off of me for $10-15 each. Is this a ok deal? These are for whole window AC units. The other option I have found is to toss them in the shred pile whole at my yard.

Also, one of the units I have looks like it was run over by a tractor and the little copper loops got torn and ripped. Would it be ok for me to tear this one apart?

Here's what they look like by the way. The one with the cover removed is the one that looks to be run over or dropped or something.

$10-$15 each is better than shred. I'm not sure how much you could make tearing them down, but for $70-$105 I'd sell them and not worry about them any more.

Yep that's what I'm thinking. It sounded like a good deal to me so I'm just waiting for him to get back to me. I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off. Thanks everyone!

Gravitar, I pay .15 a pound for a/c's so it sounds like the price you were offered was fair. If people bring them by the shop, I charge 25.00 an hour plus I keep the refrigerant.

I would have to believe is evacuated of refrigerant and I would break it down to copper , aluminum, motor and insulated wire and light iron (shred). If they don't have a refrigerant removed tag on them you cannot just throw the in shred pile here locally.

I've called my scrap yard and they said they take freon appliances with their shred and they don't have to be removed of freon

#1: I have only come across 1 company that shows any interest in draining them, but pretty much all A/C companies want nothing to do with them.

#2: The only company I have found that will drain them wants $35-$45 EACH to drain them. Hell no, I'm not paying that. WAY too much.

So, what would be a reasonable price per unit for them to be drained? I really want to get these done before the New Year. Any help would be great.
You would be better served by going to get your hvac certification and save you all the headache. It's not very hard and it does not take a long time.

Ok, I just sold them today. He gave me $50 and I got all of the electronics he had on hand (3 desktops chock full of goodies and ram, some audio equipment, DirectTV box, etc.) and he says he's going to save all his stuff for me so I can buy the stuff from him. I may see if he wants a container so he can just call me when it's full so we will see. So hopefully I will keep getting stuff from him as he was just tossing desktops into the shred pile (Shudder..)

I think I made out ok, not as much as I was hoping for but I figure I got about .16 a lb which is double my shred price. Anyway, I made a good connection and got rid of these things after a year of trying to figure out what to do with them.
