Good price for HVAC/Freon removal

might be a good time to consider your own freon removal business ; )

at those prices it's no wonder, most people would probly just cut em! Give em an alternative, and make some money too?

That's a great price to recover the freon. I'm surprised it was that cheap. While you think it's "WAY too much" the key word would be "company". These guys are running a business.

1. Any tech is going to be making AT LEAST 18.00 an hour.

2. You are using a company van, gas, and tools to do the job.

3. You are paying insurance, a lease on the warehouse, utilties, materials, ect..

4. You just tied up a tech for a few hours when you include drive time who could be working on a different job.

What you are asking for is that someone do you a "favor". I wouldn't show up anywhere for less than 75.00 (and I have very low overhead).

If I was in your area I would do it for 75.00 (2) - 200.00(7) depending on how many units and I wouldn't be making that much. I'm surprised that someone quoted you that low.

I will try to explain this for you,there are courses on line to become EPA certified so that you can recover freeon your self,pretty simple to pass once you get your cer you can go to your local supply house and they will sell you the recovery machine you need i have two commercial yellow jacket is the brand i use they have verry good customer service and also service there machines if needed.the cost is around 1500.00 after all the gauges and every thing you need.That is a little bit of a invstment but i can tell you,you will make that investment back real soon,I am located in south Florida and a/c are my main business.There are companys all over that will supply you with the transportation tanks and also pay all freight charges to get your Freeon most units that are being replaced now contain R-22 and that is the one thing you have to make sure NOT TO MIX different Freeons in the same tank,Most house hold units are 3-5 unit ton they carry 8-15 lbs of freeon in them if they are not leaking.The tanks are maintained by the Reclaimint company they are gray and all transportation tanks have a yellow top,there sizes are 125lbs 250 lbs and 500lbs we do a few chillers and these tanks we bring to the job site and recover the freeon there,right now we are getting 3.50 a lbs they pay all frieght and also produce a recovery report for each tank witch all have serial numbers on them We genarate a report for our customers with model and serial number for each unit and the amount of freeon recoverded from each machine i forgot we put a scale on the bottom of the tank when we start,some mouths i recive a check for 2,000.00 just fir the freeon hope this helps you.

Being in the business I'm sure you understand the problem he is facing. There just isn't any money in recovering freon for him.

His best bet would be to find an independent contractor working by himself or with an apprentice that could do this on HIS SCHEDULE when he had some down time and wanted a little beer money. I couldn't pass up a 500.00 or 600.00 job that will take 2 hours to recover a little freon.

I posted an extensive thread on how to get EPA certified.

The recovery machine, vacuum pump, gauges, tanks, ect.. can be purchases for about 500.00 via craigslist or ebay. If he's not doing this for a living he could use old gear that you wouldn't want to rely on for daily work but will do fine for him. I think your suggestion to get certified is really his best solution.
