I see at lot of Tv's on craigslist and everything and I have taken a few apart. however I would just break the tubes (usually with a .22 rifle) and I don't know if you should necessarily just break the tube because there is some sort of gas in them right? but if you don't break them then you have to dispose of the tubes somehow which would cost money I assume. so are you really getting enough from the TV for it to be worth while?

The worst possible thing you could do is bust the tube, not because of the gas inside (its actually under vacuum) but because of the lead that is now leaching into your local groundwater that you and your family and hopefully not my family will be drinking. So no in your case it is not worth breaking them down. Take the time to read some of the older posts about how to safely and responsibly dismantle them there is money to be made.
Depending on where you live, some places will take them from you for free, some goodwill actually give you a receipt so you can claim your donation on your taxes.

It is only worth breaking down tv's if you have a cost effective, environmentally friends place to dispose of the tubes. There are rumors of companies that pay for them, but i think its a secret because the first rule of fight club is you don't talk about fight club. What i have heard about these companies is that what they pay is usually just enough to cover transport but that makes it worth removing the copper from the tv's. Do not ask mewho buys, because I haven't been able to find out.

Check with your landfill as to what they take in terms of hazardous wastes. Here we are allowed to put them out with the trash, preferably unbroken. The glass in crts is also leaded. I am able to recycle 30% of the tv/monitor by weight, the tube and the stripped low grade board go in the trash. You need an electric screw driver with and extended bit, you can process these quickly without breaking them.

look i get it theres no "gas" in the tubes however what i meant was there is something harmful in them and i shouldn't break them, if you looked how i worded it i said i WOULD break them i really only did like 2 before i got wiser, i'm no expert nor do i claim to be in any fields really so what seems like common knowledge to some of you i have never heard of before or understand completely

bigdog72 check your local ordinances. I just found out you can put them in the trash here in Tucson AZ. Not that I do that, I send mine to Goodwill and they make a little on them.

There is a safe and easy way to scrap crt's. I do hundreds a month. Can't get enough actually but live in a state that provides a place to take them. I sure there's a thread somewhere on this forum that will instruct you. If not check out you tube. Mike the scrapper will probably have a video on it.
