    Random Metal

Let me start by saying that I have never scrapped any metal before. I recently started cleaning out my parents garage and I am considering scrapping the metal items that I find. My collection consists of very random pieces of metal, such as door knobs and sink faucets. I also have some larger items like a small roll of fencing from a garden, a few painted bike frames, and a roll of sheet metal from a medium sized children's pool. I am just wondering if I would get any value from scrapping a bunch of different things like this? For some reason, I am assuming that scrappers generally bring in large items, like washing machines and refrigerators.

little things add up. Those door knobs and faucets could be brass, use a magnet and file to check. Another thing to consider is how much some of those "little things" cost, when you have to go buy one. It's best to ensure it's scrap before scrapping it ; )

some bike frames might get a better price on craigslist

all metal is worth money, when i first started i would take single faucets (probably brass) and all sorts of single items, try to goto the yard when they are a little slow and maybe the guys can take time to show you they did for me.

I carried 47 used interior doorknob sets to my booth at the flea market saturday. I got $2.00 ea. for them and only have 3 left. They were free so it was pure profit. The faucet handles do well too when i get them. Just cause they are metal doesn't necessarily mean they are scrap, check everything out first.

Solar, the main thing with scrapmetal is to break the items down into their own seperate metals. Then sell them.

Brass & copper are worth the most & sheetmetal is the lowest.

If you want to see it in action, go to a scrapmetal dealers & watch what people bring in & how they worked on it to get it into the seperate grades.
Get a price list (though most dealers won't give you one as its probably out of date a week later) or pull one off the internet.

Read here in SMF to find out the dangers & all of the wee tips that make it easyer for you.
