    Old 1200lbs government safe/filing cabinet.

    Hello,

Let me start of with this. I am completely and totally new at metal recycling. Now on to my question.

I have been cleaning up the outside of my property, and i was poking around some junk that's been sitting on my the corner of my property in the woods since before i was born. (24 Years) I actually got around to looking at it today and as it turns out is an old 1200 pound 4 door filing cabnent/safe, it looks like it was made in the 1960's or so. It has a weight engraved on it that says about 1150 pounds. Somone has ripped one of the doors off and pried the combination lock of the side of it with a crowbar i think. It appears to be made mostly of steel. I tried everything I could to get into the other drawers on this thing with out much luck. The side of this thing is about 1 1/2 inches of solid steel, by the looks of the ripped of drawer.

So my question.. Is this thing worth trying to take up to the metal recycling place? Do I have to be able to open those drawers? Would would be the best way to sell this?

    Thanks,

    David

First, make sure the walls aren't concrete cores.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

That would really suck to get that beast to the yard and then have to take it back home.

the door that was pulled off, is it still there? you may want to look for a buyer. i have heard old safes can be very valuable. i'd take some pics and start looking for a buyer before i attempted to scrap it.
