    scrapping cars?

So I'm a bit confused on this my buddy sold his 1998 Blazer which according Tito internet weighs 4008 lbs to a local Scrapper for $350 now sheet metal price is $155 a ton at the particular scrap yard it went to. So at just over 2 tons it would only pay $310 and there was no cat on this vehicle I know that for sure so how can this Guy be making money? He is one of the bigger scrappers in my area I thought about getting into cars myself but how can I compete with that?

Take out the battery, radiator, wiring harness, starter, alternator, resale any good parts, turn a $350 junker into a $700 parts donor. The rear would be worth $300 alone.

you and me both. i do know many parts will go for more than shred; batteries, aluminum rims, starters, alternators, radiators, radios, wiring, converters. possibly more, idk. need to learn about cars.

Haha, I agree with NWO. Might have to send you a good hotel deal and pick your brain over a grill out session my good Cory. :P

lol guys i learn more everyday, im no mechanic, and have no automotive background at all, the skills i have i learned at my first job at the city of jonesboro street department. when i started i didnt know anything, i took business classes in high school. they taught me how to weld, cut, grind, i was on the sign crew/weld shop for two years. when i was 21 years old they put me on a road grader i was the youngest person they had ever put on heavy equipment and i took ALOT of heat from the older guys that didnt get the job. anyway i worked there for 8 years and learned how to run any kind of equipment enough to get by meaning im not an expert, pour concrete, lay asphalt and got my CDL, my one skill that im actually proud of is i can put a trailer anywhere and square up to a car. well a 2nd skill also, we have to talk to the people to buy their cars and you have to be respectful of their needs and feelings, some of the guys around here seriously lack communication skills, if you cant buy it you cant scrap it

edit, i do got two guys that are here most everyday and two guys i can call if i get in a pinch

steve, he is a firefighter and since i have went full time he has stepped down from a 50/50 split. he knows quite alot more than me about cars but he isnt a mechanic either

dustin, he knows more than either of us tho he is still new to this and thinks we should fix all of them, he's coming around and seeing its easier to scrap a car for 400 than to spend money and time to fix it and get 700 to 800

cecil, is my girlfreinds brother, a real go getter with good basic mechanical skills

jason, works at a local hot rod shop/body shop, he hates hauling them off to especially the wrecks. he comes and hangs out every friday and some saturdays

we wouldnt be nearly as successful without these guys

Seeing as this guy is "one of the bigger scrappers" in your area he is probably also getting a better price from what ever yard he's using.

I feel the exact same way. I see guys with ads saying "600+ for your scrap car!" I can't compete with that. I need to turn the cars around fast, I can't sit on them to try and maybe sell a few parts. There's way too much competition in my area. I wouldn't even call it.competition, the big companies from Toronto (about an hour away) are purposely killing.off the little.guys like me. Iv parked my truck and trailer because of it... Iv had to focus all my time and energy into my full time job, haven't bought a car since November...
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

We buy and process about 6 blazers a year, i wont hesitate to pay $800 for one that has a good front clip and good tires. Ones beat up real bad i am paying $500 for. Id drop $1500 on a zr2 blazer in a heartbeat, they are hard to find and most of the parts are unique.
I buy and sell all types of scrap and escrap. I buy specialty and hard to sell escrap. I buy resale items. PM me or contact me at jghilino@hotmail.com
I AM ACTIVELY BUYING ESCRAP OF ALL TYPES. BOARDS, RAM, CPUS AND MUCH MORE

imo he had some of the parts sold, aluminum wheels will bring 10-12 dollars each. If he brings in a lot of cars he likely gets $20 a ton more
