I have been collecting the capacitors I have pulled out of tvs and microwaves. What are people doing with these are they a craigslist ebay or scrap item if so what would they be classified as any help on this would be great

I've been trying to find an answer to that question mysefl. I had an e-wast buyer that would take them but he would not pay for them he said he had an aluminum guy that took them for the aluminum. Other than that I have not been able to find anyone to take them. I have never opened one to see whats in them but was told they contain oil.
It depends on what type of capacitor you are talking about...
Tantalum capacitors obviously contain the rare earth mineral Tantalum, some ceramic packages contain Palladium and are called MCCs for short (Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors). Most contain Aluminum, but all are worth something. It's obviously easier to separate them as you are removing them.
Here are what MCC/MLCCs look like
This is how they are basically designed:

As you can see there is some overlapping in design and what they look like. But if you pay attention, take a few apart, you can become fairly adept and being able to tell which ones are worth money, and your time, and which ones should be thrown into a bucket to be sold as Al scrap.

I think he is talking about capacitors from microwave ovens. They are about 2" tall and olvel some of the ones out of tv's and other older electronics can be up to 3" tall and round.
I toss them in the shred personally. Some yards buy them separately, but I don't mess with them too much.
I think he is talking about this kind:

Yeah, those are Al, obviously. I see what you mean.

I saw a youtube video that said they can go with sealed units, I dont know about that tho. Could always bring one to the yard and ask if and what they take them as. good luck.
Those are the ones that I was talking about. Most yards that I know of won't take them although the core buyer that I go to might I'll have to check.
I have at least 100lbs of capacitors I have had for over 6 months trying to figure out what to do with them If someone figures it out please let us know.
The big ones out of the microwaves can be thrown in with your motors/transformers. That according to my local scrap yard.......
I have been trying to find out what sort of oil is inside them. It smells just like a mosquito repellent I have used.
That gave me a idea about 3rd world countrys, capactor oil & the Malaria problem in 3rd world countrys.
I see the one in the pic. above says no"pcb's" I think some of the older ones might have "pcb's" in them. If they do do not open them "pcb's" will cause cancer.
Throw them in with your motors or you could just store them. lol
That's what I've been doing, just storing them but I'm going ask my core buyer that I sell my motors to the next time I go.
I notice theres a 'HPFNT' or such on the side of the capactors. Thats what capactor oil is inside them.
I know a little more but would have to look it up again. I gotta go now but will return with the info I have found/e.
I have checked a bunch of microwave capactors & they had this written on the outside about the liquid.

After a lot of searching swIm found a website thats selling capacitor oil & gives it another name of Phenyl Ethylbenzene Ethane. Not uncommon in chemistry, ie dihydrogenmonooxide is water....
1-phenyl-ethyl-benzene | CAS No 612-00-0 | Synthesis and Physical Properties
1,1-DIPHENYLETHANE is the same as 1-phenyl-ethyl-benzene.
Just a little more info, but I still can't find a use for it, except maybe making 4-ethoxy-3-hydroxybenzaldehyde (isobourbonal) from it.

I think its similar to Ethylvanillin, 'cept I don't know that much about predictive organic chemistry.....
