About ten years ago a guy confided with me "That theres over a gram of Platium in the contacts of a magneto".
Is this true? I searched & yep its true, they do use Platium in the contacts. (no suprise there) .
But is it more than a gram? I found a site that sells contacts for magneto's & their price was $110 for the two contacts, but they are only plated with the Platium.
From what he said I'm thinking that they were solid Platium or a, say, 50/50 mix with something, like Tungsten.
Other current magneto parts sellers just use Tungsten, home builders are told to "Use a TIG welding Tungsten rod".
I couldn't find a deceint price history of Platium except for this site mentioning that "In 1905 a ounce of Platium was worth $25" >
Platinum production in 1905 page 17
Back then, if you had the money for a car, 1/32 of $25 wasn't gonna make much of a difference to you.
So, does anyone know more about this?
Magnetos are getting hard to find here, but in America... Well I have seen the photos of old wrecked cars on this site, stacks & stacks of them.
That Platium is going to be in as good as condition as the day it was made, 110 years later.
