window screen frames

Does anyone have any experience scrapping window screen frames? I was hoping to not have to remove the actual screen. Do you think the scrap yard will make me remove the screen before scrapping the aluminum frames? I was driving around a couple weeks ago and came across a whole mess of them, about 40 large screens in all.

I have scrapped quite a few, but the first time I scrapped them I only took one in to see if they would take them with the screens in them. My yard will not take them with the screens in and give full aluminum price. I would take one in on a load with you and ask, you never know it might save you a lot of time pulling out the screens.

For the most money - Remove the rubber holding the screen in. Throw the screen in a pile for Light Iron. Remove sheet, if any.. Screws into same pile as screens. Break the frame apart. Spread the ends and remove the pieces of diecast. Throw the diecast into a bucket. The frames are extrusion - I tie them into manageable bundles. When you've got 30 or 40 done, haul them up and get your $2.00. (Sarcastic - barely.) I've quit paying for aluminum. More trouble than it's worth if it has to be processed. Stuff like boat motors and aluminum heads are worth fooling with.

Thanks for the info. I've broken a few at a time down before, which isn't bad. If the scrap yard won't take them as is, maybe I'll just do a few each night until they're done. I wonder if I could burn the screens out. But then, the rubber strip would still remain.

I've done a few screens. Best way I've found to get the splines out is to stick it with an awl or other type of pointed tool, pry it up, then grab it with pliers and finish pulling it off.
