I used to think that also. Was educated and bummed for awhile afterwards. Lost a lot of money over the years. Now just from scratching it up and holding into the light, it gives off a reddish hue.
A trick to see the true color of a metal is to first clean/scratch it. then take a tissue or TP and put it over the cleaned spot and wet it enough that you can see though it. This will let you see the metal without all the light polluting it, and the luster of it getting in the way of the color.
