When scrapping e-scrap objects, do they have to be intact? or is it sold in weight just like metal?
Say, like if I was to scrap a motherboard or ram out of a tower, do I need to take it apart with screwdrivers and such
or could I just swing a splitting maul down the side of it and not worry about chipping or cracking the e-scrap?

If you plan on selling material to a refiner, you should use a screw driver. If you plan on selling in bulk to a scrap yard, then don't bother doing anything with it at all.
The further you break your material down, the better price you can ask for. If you remove the connectors and accumulate them, you might sell them but it would be difficult and you wouldn't make nearly as much as you otherwise might. If you remove the gold plated pins from the connectors, you will make more money and be able to sell them much faster.
You add value to your material the more labor you are willing to invest in it.

You should remove them whole and sell to a buyer here, unless you'll be accumulating truckloads, then you'll be ready for the refiner approach.
If they're not whole, it won't matter much really, as they buy it by the pound anyway, as your yard buys other scrap. Most yards won't pay anywhere near what buyers here will pay for the motherboards, CPUs and RAM. You can find a number of buyers here from the main SMF page, in the "Buyers and Sellers" forum
The computer cases can then be tossed in with scrap metal, the power supplies can possibly(depending on your local yard) go as electric motors/copper bearing. The CD/DVD and hard drives can be broken down further, depending on the time you have to invest in it, you'll certainly wish to at least remove the boards from these for sale to a higher grade buyer(as described above)

Or to save to all the trouble, just sell the computers to us at .20 a lb. save a lot of time
