Out of State Aluminum can recycling

Just wondering what the protocol is on bringing can from a state without deposit across state lines to a state with deposits. Hypothetically let's say I go at it hard, save all my cans for an entire year, and decide that I want to go to California on vacation. Could I bring my cans, that I get $0.60 per pound for here and tale them with me to cash in on the $2.00 + I've read about in California? Or would I have to have a California I'D? Most of the cans I see still have the deposit info on them even though we get no deposit here in Oklahoma. It will probably never happen, just a thought that's been on my mind lately.

All of the more generic cans like Faygo, Rc Cola, and such print the deposit amounts on every can regardless of where they are sold. Coke and Pepsi, which have many bottling facilities, do not. This was completely hypothetical as I was only curious. I would never actually go though with it. Thanks for the quick responses guys.

Every 6 months this comes up. Did the Seinfeld episode re-run again in the past 2 weeks? Please, Please, Please research the program again. You'll see why it doesn't work. There are 3 main reasons it doesn 't work. Next week will be a pop quiz on what those 3 reasons are.

Did anyone know out here you can ask google or any browser, for that matter, a question? You can actually type in "Why won't hauling cans from a state with no recycling deposit to a state with a deposit not work" and get the answers. It's almost like the internet can read your mind.

I guess what I'm really asking is, how do they verify that the cans were purchased in CA or elsewhere, and that the deposit was actually paid. Or is there no verification, only the refund amount stamped on the can as ryanw stated?

I hate when they try doing that! On a recent google search I began to type scrap metal something or another, and as I began to type scr it kept tossing southwest airlines up there ; )

I still want to know if I live in AZ and vacation in California stay for a week and buy soda, btl water and beer and are charged the deposit on the cans and bottles when I buy them in California, how do I get the deposit back? I just leave them for the hotel staff!!

In Vermont anybody can do returnables (as long as it says VT) but in Maine you have to be a resident even if you bought them there.

I can see where someone would want to try this 34 cans to a pound X .05 is $1.70 a pound. I don't think people make as much money as they think they can doing this! Not worth the risk for a truck load of cans! Now the small time guy who lives on the border state and takes cans once a week, he may do ok, with this scam...

In one of the rare cases where arrests were made, two Department of Justice agents happened to spot a truck hauling cans as it entered California from Yuma, Arizona.

The agents followed the vehicle 150 to San Diego, where the men inside turned in 21 bags full of cans.

The process was repeated at least three more times in the next weeks. Officials estimate the men made $189,000 in illegal gains.

I call BS on this. If my math is correct, they supposedly hauled nearly 4 million cans, and if I understand it correctly they have to be scanned one by one, which means they can't be crushed.

I've seen machines that scan them, but mostly they are bought by weight just like everywhere else.
