Anything worthwhile inside these boxes? I've got a few I'm going to junk soon, but don't want to if I can scrap something out of their guts.

Well it depends on how much you value your time. You can bull out the low grade board inside the steel case. You can rip out the small aluminum heat sinks if there are some. You can rip out the small transformers if you want. There is some wire in the old ones. When I come across these, I usually just throw them in along with the shred.
I have torn apart a few VCR's and there wasn't a whole lot in them. I tossed the board into the pile I have started already and tossed wires in another pile. There are some small aluminum parts in them if you wanted to take the time to pull it. If I have bigger items with more metal, I would do that first and use the VCR's as time killers until I get another bigger project. But that is just me. Even though printers, VCR's, DVD players and small electronics like that don't carry much weight in metal, I will still rip into them.
Videos .
I found most of the bases are either sheet metal, or Magnesium.
I get the transformer out & the plastic covered wire, smash all the board up & rip off anything metal, clips & springs etc.
Undo the spinng head & put it aside untill I have enough, its Ali with brass & steel screws & a tiny motor with copper wire.
Theres some copper RF sheilding shim too.
Not enough to bother weighing but since it does bring in money, as opposed to the cost of dumping it, so I recycle it.
I have a 1/2 sack of magnesium, I think its worth less than Ali but can be added to your Ali scrap to bring the weight up as most Ali is 5% or more Magnesium anyway.
The CD DVD players.
I rip the covers off & break the plastic up & seperate out the boards & break off the 'read head' & split the 'tiny but strong' magnets out from it.
Theres little worth in them as scrapmetal but provide lots of interesting & tiny parts for other projects.
Attach a mirror to the moving heads parts & connect the copper coils to a music amps speaker connections.
Shine a laser onto the mirror & you get a laser display thing.

I love taking these apart, they are fun. Most vcrs have a nice amount of brass in them
I tear apart anything and everything. Twice weekly i get between 8-12 gaylords of electronics. I've probably torn apart every single electronic known to man!
