    Steel cable

    Hello,
We have a few spools of steel cable to scrap and the yard wants it cut into 5ft. lenghts. It is 1 inch to 1 1/2 We have been using a cutting torch but it's slow going. We also have some galvanized cable and don't want to use the torch due to the fumes. Anyone know of a better way to cut it. Thanks

I've never had to cut any cable. Why are they requiring it?

    I'd find a different yard.

Easier for them to load up and haul out I would guess. They don't want to have to pay some guy extra to go out and get it all prepared themselves, they just want to get it in, load it up, and ship it out. Our yard would rather have the guys inside stripping wires and separating non ferrous metals when they are not taking in loads.

Is there anything wrong with the cable, i would think it would be more valuable as heavy cable than as scrap

Steel cable has to be cut up to to t going thru the shredder...if it isnt cut it gets tangled up in the shredder and then if they get in it to untangle it the pieces of wire turn into flying needles...lol.....workers have been severely injured by the debris and some even killed

steel cable is a scrap yards worst nightmare! when we recieve cable at our yard, it usually goes rite to the burners and they cut it up in 5ft lengths.
