    Scrapping a desk

Hello again. I just scored some Great new desks for my classroom at an auction. My principal has said that the other schools in our district have scrapped the old student desks that they weren't using anymore. These have about a 3/4 inch wooden top to them. The wooden top is about 2' by 2.5'. He was told that he would have to take the wooden top off of the desk before scrapped. The whole desk weighs 24 pounds and the wooden top weighs in at 8 pounds.

I was wondering if taking the wood top off was correct or should we find a different yard that would take them with the wood on them?
    Thanks

    Greg

Just a thought--but could the wood tops not be used by say a wood working class or maybe a trade school? Might be worth checking into.

I have had good luck selling surplus school desks on Craigslist.

1/3 of your weight being wood is too much for my yard and my conscience.

I scrapped some small desks from a day care once. Sounds similar to yours. They were all rusted from water damage so not resell able. Ask my yard if the wood needed to come off and they said no as long as 75% of the weight was steel. Check with your yard first.

that "wood" might only be particle board. It makes good enough tops, but can't handle moist environments like real wood can

    Thanks guys.

We were trying to think of a way to recycle the wood in a painting or art class of some sort.

Just a quick note on how insane school furniture is. I looked up the website Hon.com to find the retail on the stuff we got. We got 52 desks, smartlink series I think and 38 chairs for 350. The retail on that amount was $17,000. Like I said I am guessing there is a little mark up in the desk business. But still that was a good score I thought.

    Thanks again.

Anytime your market involves spending the public's money via a government entity, mark up goes up by a stupid factor.
