Question Stainless Steel what to do

I just got 4 sheets of high end stainless steel. It appears to be 16 gauge (1.5 mm thick) 78" long X 48" wide folded along its length into a right angle 24" X 24". This stuff is "non magnetic" shiny brushed finish and its heavy weighing 61lbs a sheet (X4) The guy said he used it for a trade show display.

so the question is do I scrap it? and how do I know the grade? or should I sell it? and where would I do that.

    I live in Greenwich CT

I'm new to the forum so I don't know how to attach photos or where to see replies ... But I'm learning... Thanks

Craigslist...check what an average sheet runs at lowes and sell a little under. Trust me someone will want it for sone project or for their shop.

Check if its magnetic. If it is most yards only by as reg steel. In your case its only going to be worth $20-25 depending on your yards price. If its non magnetic its scrap value is $100-$140 depending on your yards price. In either case try to sell 1st (which is easier said than done)... good luck to you.

I know Ive made large bundles on old stainless steel gas grills some run over 300 pounds. I had one about 7 or 8 ft wide that netted nearly $300.

    Stainless Steel what to do

At my yard that grill would have to be completely stripped down. Stainless is at .36# here.

I looked into fixing it up. The replacement parts would not have been worth it. New this is an $1,000 grill, I believe it had 6 burners. I don't remember exactly, but parts plus cleaning time wouldn't have netted me more than just zipping it apart and scrapping it.

upload your pics to photobucket or imgbox etc, save the link to the photo from there, and insert it into the "insert image" box in your posts

Depending on your area and how populated it is, you should find those sell easily on craigslist. Having been used in a display I'd guess they're in good condition, and could be used in a lot of places. Be sure to include keywords in your ad such as "restaurant", "builders", or "builder supply" etc

Stainless steel can be magnetic. 316 has a slight magnetic pull to ans 316L will have even less as you move up on the ladder to the high end of the type of stainless material the lower the carbon will be found in the material. if this was used for display it most likely a 316 or 316L stainless, it could have been made out of 304 stainless if it was a higher end display. if the sheets are in production condition you might want to find a fab shop in your area they may offer allot more for them then the scrap yard. The only way to find out the grade for sure is to have it tested with a PMI gun or chemical analysis. I hope this helps out )

Wish I lived closer to CT, I'd buy them off you and see if someone could "press" those sheets for me to make new fenders for my trailer. 16 gauge is what trailer fenders generally max out in thickness. Dang!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

I went to a company that sells steel studs, I bought 10 inch wide studs, picked the length and gauge. Great value! cut the sides in 4 places bent them over and wala, had new fenders for the trailer cheep. Black paint and job done in 45 min.

Quick update, put them on CL and sold them for $50 each... total $200... not bad for free and way above what the scrap yard wanted to pay

Here in Phoenix, the guy we take our non-ferrous metals to, he said the prices are real low for stainless steel. He told us we should hang onto our stainless steel for now.

I know its bugging the s... out of my husband. He can't stand it having scrap metals not being turned in on a regular basis.

Anyways, if the stainless steel prices are real low where you are at, you should try to sell. Just about every time we have metals that are too good to scrap, and we list them for sale, the metals sell fast. Take to an auction, list on eBay, Craigslist, or... Shipping in your case will be a challenge, local pickup delivery or
maybe have the buyer make shipping arrangements.

You are correct whogivesascrapmetal: Stainless here is paying a whopping .30 cents/lb. Only thing that pays less is shred steel!

Its probably more than likely 304 S/S or something similar. Its just to expensive to make sheets like that out of a higher grade
