generator

Hey everyone, I bought a b&s generator a few yrs ago for a house tear down I was doing, the generator part fried, so I was wondering what you think that part may scrap for? I dont plan to cut all the copper out of it; although I know I'd get more that way.

A generator is pretty much a motor running backwards. Instead of applying power to turn the motor, you are turning the motor to produce power. You are going to get the motor price for the actual "generator" part.

Because of the demand of generators, I certainly would NOT scrap it. You can fix the generator pretty inexpensively, or in alternative, there would be no shortage of people who would buy the generator for FAR more than you would get in scrap so they could fix it.

List it for 80.00 on CL, you are only going to get 5-8.00 in scrap.

I'm wondering how bad the generator was "fried"? Did the windings burn up or did you just have a smoke show in the control box where the power plugs are located?

If the windings were overheated then to fix the generator you are looking at a rewind and at this point you probably don't have a resellable generator.

It could be sold to a scrap yard at electric motor prices which are about 20 cents per lb. So Phantom's suggestion of trying to sell it as a generator head that needs some repair on your local Craig's is a decent one unless, of course, it is really fried. It does sound like you are planning on keeping the B&S engine?

Ironically, I haven't come a cross a motor with burnt out winding in quite a while. Usually the brushes burn up, but if there was very little use, I would first be checking for other problems. Most B&S generators made in the last few years are "smart" generators. The inverters were controlled by computer or by a control board. I'm sure that would ring a bell with most people here. There is a ton of stuff that could have gone wrong, which is why there would be a secondary market for people that like to fix them. It might just need a new controller or a fuse went.

I took it to a family member who is an electrician. He took it apart and said the windings were burnt. He said one section of it was black, and burnt up.
I bought it used a few years ago, and could tell it had not been used much at all. I used it a few times and it quit working. If I scrap it I would keep the engine. I listed it for $50 and have had quite the response on it. Figured the motor would be worth that; I'd put it on my tiller but it would need a gas tank rigged up, and a different muffler.

Most small generator engines have a short, tapered crankshaft that make them difficult to use for anything but a generator. What model briggs is it? The cast iron ones have collector value.

I would buy the engine for 100 shipped to Pa if you want to zip 18433. Pm me... My genny died last year, because some ahole neighbors didnt like the noise and loosened the oil fill plug. So it blew out of oil, becuase me the smart one forgot to hook the low oil sensor back up.

So if you want to ship the motor, pm. Would love to get my genny back online.
