Is everything ferrous worth the same?

Should everything that sticks to a magnet get put in the shred? I get things like galvanized and tin and really nice thick shiny square plates. Its all the same? If not should how should I separate it?

There's at least a half a dozen different categories of steel. It's best to talk with your yard as to how to separate it. Here we only have 2 choices, prepared and tin. for prepared they want it over 1/8 inch thick and under 36", some places I think it's 1/4" and up to 5 feet. Tin/shred is anything lighter or longer

It's common to have at least Unprepared, Prepared, Cast, Sheet and #1 iron.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I agree with Bear, talk to your yard. I have two yards 160 miles from each other, I live in between the two. Each yard has it's own procedures. I would go one step further. I would ask for a tour of the facility. Both of my yards provided the tour. I acted like I did not have any idea at all and the foreman in each area was more than happy to educate me. When loads are brought in, more education was provided and since they were educating me they gave me some breaks. This strategy has paid huge dividends for me, both in education as well as relationships. Good luck.
